http://www.suntimes.com/output/religion/cst-nws-zim11.htmlHARARE, Zimbabwe -- The Anglican bishop of Harare ordered his cathedral and the capital's other Anglican churches closed Sunday, and instead held a prayer meeting and fund-raiser at a sports arena to celebrate his 33rd wedding anniversary.
No notice was posted at the Harare cathedral to explain why its doors were locked Sunday -- the first time it has been closed since Zimbabwe's 1980 independence.
Church officials accused Bishop Nolbert Kunonga of demanding the closures so congregations could attend his event, which also was meant to raise funds for a clerical training college in Harare. snip
Several cars outside, including the bishop's limousine, were bedecked with ribbons and colorful balloons. Vendors sold Bibles and Christian mementos. Men in dark suits identified by lapel badges as ''security'' patrolled the arena in scenes more reminiscent of a political rally in the troubled southern African nation.
