American Airlines Statement Regarding The Path to 9/11 on ABC-TV
Monday September 11, 6:03 pm ET

FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines today issued the following statement regarding the ABC-TV program The Path to 9/11:
"The Disney/ABC television program, The Path to 9/11, which began airing last night, is inaccurate and irresponsible in its portrayal of the airport check-in events that occurred on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

"A factual description of those events can be found in the official government edition of the 9/11 Commission Report and supporting documents.

"This misrepresentation of facts dishonors the memory of innocent American Airlines employees and all those who lost their lives as a result of the tragic events of 9/11."

American said it will have no further comment beyond the statement at this time.

Current AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR - News) releases can be accessed on the Internet.

1. Disney has become such a slimy corporation that...
...even other corporations can't stomach it.

As I posted earlier, I've put a digital "lock" on ABC to remind myself not to watch it.

4. I don't think anything like this has ever happened before.
A major Airline calling out a TV network for being irresponsible. This is some weird stuff.

5. American Airlines
I sent an email to American Airlines by clicking on the link at one of the websites and telling them they should be ashamed of letting Atta on the planes. Of course I knew better, but I thought it would be worth it to let them know who wingnuts would take the movie.

I got an answer. Now is said from the CEO, but of course we all know it was from some person who sends out those things. And it said that they did not condone the movie, they were upset etc etc. And they did not let ATTA on the plane etc.

I sent a reply telling them I knew that. But my email was just to let them know that the ABC movie could do damage to their company and that it was false. I said I knew the incidents depicted were untrue. :)

19. that was really good. I emailed them too, but not about Atta
Told them I was concerned because PT911 indicated that they let terrorists on planes even though they had been tagged as bad guys, and how could I feel safe flying them if they didn't follow their own guidlines. I like you letter. Funny.

8. Proud To Fly American!
Even though their seats have no legroom. Of course, none of 'em do these days. :D Seriously, I saw something on NBC news not too long ago about how American was doing their best to conserve energy. It's true - we were asked to close our blinds and turn off the lights when we deplaned to keep the interior cool for the next group.

Good for them for calling out the wingnuts! They probably weren't even aware of the misinformation until you told them.

13. Good for AA. I hope they sue the pants off ABC.
Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 10:28 PM by ocelot
The interesting thing here is that AA might have a better shot at a successful lawsuit than individuals like Albright and Berger, who are public figures. It's possible for a corporation to sue for something akin to defamation if you say something false that tends to cause harm to its business -- and they are not stuck with the "actual malice" requirement that a public figure would have to overcome. Plus, AA can probably better afford to sue than a person. So let's stand back and watch the corporations beat each other up, but I don't blame AA at all if they decide to go after ABC.

14. Holy s***, they really mean it
I saw the President of AA's response on a thread earlier and thought it was BS.

They're really pissed.

And for good reason, it makes AA look like it was negligent in it's own security procedures. Which it wasn't.

16. AA needs to take out full-page ads on their rebuttal of this schlock movie
They need to air commercials on television, maybe interview a relative of one of the flight attendants. Make it personal. Make it real. No spin necessary. Kill the lies with the truth.

29. did anybody see the ticket agent on Oprah yesterday?
The guy who originally checked Mohammed Atta and another hijacker in, in Portland, Maine (was it US Air? I don't want to get sued!). Oh, my gosh, it was so sad.

He had a bad feeling about Atta (and, btw, didn't think the other hijacker knew he was about to die in the hijacking), so much so that he didn't give him his boarding pass for the connecting flight on American, as he normally would have done. (He didn't mention anything about Atta's name coming up on the screen and a supervisor saying it's okay, as was apparently portrayed in "Path to 9/11.") He wanted Atta to go through at least one more person, so he told Atta to talk to American when he got there. Atta knew he was supposed to get the second boarding pass but apparently didn't push it, and went to get on the first leg of the flight.

The guy had tremendous guilt--so sad, since there was nothing he could have done to stop it. To make things even worse, it turns out that the woman who worked for American who checked Atta in on the final leg later committed suicide... if the guy had given Atta the boarding pass for American, she would never have come into contact with him. Can you imagine how the poor guy feels? His decision to not give Atta the second boarding pass could have made him a hero, saving thousands of lives, if Atta had been stopped... instead, it only results in a woman's suicide. I hope he gets over his guilt--Atta is responsible for her death, not him--especially since that split-second decision could just as easily have turned out to have saved as many lives as the passengers of Flight 93 did.

He seemed like a really sweet guy.
