I have never been a /big/ fan of Maher. Heck, I didn't even agree with what he said after 911.
With that being said, it was a punk move to silence him.

There are laws against state-sponsored Propaganda. If there's a money trail that leads to the GOP or the White House, someone needs to go to jail. This movie was total bullshit.

Why 730 days?
The ABC movie was so slow, it may have seemed that long, but it actually wasn't...

I'm not saying I would forgive ABC for the docudrama if they did that, but it would be a step in the right direction.

13. Welcome to reality. Networks HAVE no licenses. |
|
Their owned and operated stations DO have licenses, and they are in the larger markets. But most TV stations are AFFILIATES who contract to take the network's programming.
Also, under what would you challenge the licenses of the TV stations? There are no more equal time provisions in broadcast law, no requirement to prove public interest to keep their licenses, and no ownership limits, either. It began with Reagan, continued under Bush 1, Clinton did nothing about it, and Bush 2 just LOVES to have owned broadcast channels.
It's one of those little laws that weren't as compelling as, say, gays in the military, so everyone in the Democratic Party but a few of us ignored the slow fascist creep in broadcasting. But you sure feel it now, don't you?

29. welcome to reality?... |

Thank you for the admonition...it's just what I needed. I have no idea about federal communications laws or how broadcasters get to be broadcasters. It's not something I've ever been inclined to read up on. Forgive me, I should have read up on the law, before I mentioned what I 'thought' to be a just consequence for abuse of airwaves.

30. Well, that's why I'm here... |
|
...as a person who's worked in TV for decades, and (yes) cringed through the stuff ABC made us run Sunday and Monday, I know some of this stuff. A lot of people think, mistakenly, that networks are licensed by the government.
What CAN be done is, their owned-and-operated (O&O) stations and their affiliates (who only contract to carry the network's programming) can have their licenses challenged. That would affect them...
...but since Reagan pretty much disemboweled the rules that make TV stations responsible to the local communities they serve, it's hard to affect the licensees. (I also don't like the fact that both Bushes, Clinton and the Democrats in Congress have allowed that erosion to continue.)
And it's more than politics that bothers me about it, although that is a major part of it. If your local station has no more responsibility than a McDonald's, there is no reason for them to "serve" you anything but fried gruel, or the programming equivalent thereof. Local TV has basically stopped helping the Boy Scouts, the Arbor Day Foundation, the American Cancer Society and your local Council of Churches, because they don't connect with your community...only your community's wallets.
That's not why I got into TV. Until about 15 years ago, I considered my job a way to serve my community, inform it, teach it, and make the people in it recognize one another. Now I feel like a fry cook, and I hope that someday the business will let me take off the apron and that damn name tag.

11. Have them be visted by the arch angels in Dogma in their |
|
boardroom.
You are responsible for raising an icon which draws worship from the Lord. You have broken the first commandment. Not only that, I'm afraid not a one of you passes for a decent human being. Your continued existence is a mockery of morality. Like you, Mr. Burton. Last year cheated on your wife of 17 years 8 times. You even had sex with her best friend while you were supposed to be home watching the kids.
Loki: In the bed that you and your wife share, no less.
Bartleby: Mr. Newman - you got your girlfriend drunk at last year's Christmas party and then paid a kid from the mail room to have sex with her while she was passed out, just so you could break up with her guilt-free when she sobbingly confessed in the morning. She killed herself two months later. Mr. Brace disowned his gay son. Very compassionate, Mr. Brace. Mr. Ray put his mother in a third-rate nursing home and then used the profits from the sale of her home to buy an oriental rug for himself. Heavens. Mr. Barker flew to Thailand on the company account to have sex with an eleven year old boy. Mr. Holtzman okayed the production of Mooby Dolls from materials he knew to be toxic and unsafe, because it was - survey says? - less costly.
Bartleby: You, on the other hand, are an innocent. You lead a good life. Good for you. But you, Mr. Whitland, you have more skeletons in your closet than the rest of this assembled party. I cannot even mention them aloud.
Loki: You're his father, you sick fuck.

Edited on Mon Sep-11-06 11:47 PM by Jack Rabbit
Featuring scenes of Doug Feith editing the ambiguity out of Pentagon reports; Dick and Scooter in Langley telling analysts what to write (if they know what's good for them); Frat Boy getting a CIA briefing on Iraq, asking Tenet "Is that all we got" and grinning ear to ear after Tenet reassures him with the "slam dunk" manure; Cheney being overjoyed as he handles the Niger forgery, his aide pointing out that it's an easily detected fraud and Cheney saying "so what?"; Bush telling Blair that the evidence of WMDs is weak, but the balloon is going up in March with or without a UN enabling resolution; Judy Miller interviewing Chalabi about Iraq's weapons and checking the story with Feith; the neocons getting information from Hardball, lapping it up even though they know he's lying; and other scenes documenting the cynical, bald faced lies told to manipulate the public into supporting the war.
