1. William Shakespeare. . .
from "Sonnet 76". . .

So all my best is dressing old words new,
Spending again what is already spent

And here's a thought from Alexander Pope, An Essay on Criticism, 1709:

A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, and drinking largely sobers us again.

3. This is incredibly inflammatory and insensitive.
What have we become? New Yorkers and Americans grieving our own. The light is up only 1 day a year now and it's a fitting tribute.

9. The imagery is real we can deny its origin at our peril
Many Germans thought the effect at Nurnberg was beautiful and fitting as well...

14. Not at all.
Poetic beauty can be found in the strangest of places. As can truth.

Lobbying by the tobacco industry aside, the Nazis knew the truth about smoking decades before the rest of the world was forced to concede the truth. And even then, the truth was "new", since admitting that the Nazis got there first would have been suicidal.

In response to the OP, I have no problem with this imagery. The source of any given idea is largely irrelevant. What truly (and only) matters, is the reason for which an idea is put forward. Thus tugging at heartstrings to advance one's personal cause at the expense of others is bad. (Whoopsie George)

Plucking a glissando to commemorate the many lives cut short is to be applauded en creshendo.

17. You've substituted the Neonazicons for "all New Yorkers"?
That is the most transparent strawman I have ever seen.

16. Questioning is not "inflammatory" or "insensitive." It is what free
peoples do. Those who do not like it do not have to participate.

19. No, massive, awe-inspiring, war-generating public displays are not the
same thing as food. Unclesepp gets it completely wrong.

18. Large, war-time, government-created massive displays are not the
same thing as underpants. You know that.

Thanks for playing.

11. I don't know what "we've become"
But, if I had to guess, you've become a major stock holder in Reynolds Aluminum foil. Your REALLY stretching it there. I think the lights are beautiful and are fitting tribute.

12. Some day we may be able to reclaim the swastika, too
Before Hitler, it was an ancient and honored symbol of the sun across many cultures in the old world and the new.

20. oh please,
Light, water, earth and fire used as media in buildings, works of art, environmental design, belong to no person or regime or era. Light has always been used by architects, designers and builders throughout time, until the present, to symbolize the spirit, whether G-d or human. Albert Speer's work was filmed extensively by Leni Riefenstahl to dessiminate and document Hiter's power and ideology. By that token, should documentary film-making be considered tainted?

I'm a New Yorker who can see the lights from across the river in NJ where I live now. I can think of no more beautiful, fitting tribute to the people and towers, to the fill the empty sky- light energy, from earth reaching to the sky.
