17. I guess you haven't been watching too closely
This past year with Dean-Reid-Pelosi The Democrats have been pretty agressive and on the whole unified. I think they will obviously applaude vapid and non-controvercial lines but, like last year, they will probably jeer or groan at some of the other rhetoric.

BTW, welcome to DU.

3. Will Pitt has an interesting idea:
Democrats: Stand Up and Walk Out

I have a wild and crazy idea.

George W. Bush’s delivery of the State of the Union address will take place on Tuesday, January 31, a little more than a week from now. It is my strong belief that every single Democrat present in the House chamber for the speech should, at a predetermined moment, stand up and walk out. No yelling. No heated words. Every Democrat should simply stand silently and leave.

Crazy, I know. Crazy, and possibly the best idea ever put before a body of Democrats since the New Deal.

Understand this, congressional Democrats, and understand it well: you are not dealing merely with a body of political opponents in the GOP. You are dealing with a group of people that want you exterminated politically. The days of walking the halls of the Rayburn Building, sharing a bourbon with a colleague from the other side of the aisle, and hammering out a compromise are as dead as Julius Caesar. Collegiality is out. Mutual respect is out. They want you gone for good. Erased. Destroyed.

And you, you puddings, have been far too polite about this. The writing has been on the wall for a while now. Back in 1995, Republican Senator Phil Gramm said, “We’re going to keep building the party until we’re hunting Democrats with dogs.” That was eleven years ago. If you listen close, you can hear the beasts baying in the distance, waiting to slip the leash. Your limp tactics in the face of the assault upon you, your vacillation, your strange hope that maybe the GOP will be nicer tomorrow, has left you all smelling like Alpo.

4. I posted something similiar a few days ago with one caveat -
When * tells the lst lie (shouldn't take long), the Dems en masse should stand up and silently walk out.

They will have to remove their "pink tutus" first!

Crazy? I don't think so.

5. I would like to see them (Dems) sit without applauding at all
When B* is announced simply stand out of respect for the office

No applauding

During the speech:

No applauding

No matter what he says:

No applauding

And when they are inevitably asked about this behavior they should answer:

The SOTU is not a campaign event. We are here to listen because we are a co- equal branch of government. We are not his cheerleading squad. We shouldn't turn this into a rah rah event for any president. The issues facing America are too important.

18. Best idea yet IMO

I hate to see them clap for every dumb thing.

Rather they should clap for nothing, not one thing.

Even if he said, " We will help Katrina victims," they know it is just a Brownie Lie.

I also think they should all wear Black so they can easily be recognized and later they can say they were in mourning for the real America.

11. Do you really think..
The Democrats will refuse to applaud the efforts of the troops?

Bushco aren't stupid. Evil, corrupt, immoral yes but stupid no. The speech will be full of applause cues that will force "patriotic" "national security" Dem's to clap or look like they are with the terrorists.

Will Pitt's idea seems like a great way to make ourselves feel good suggesting it, but it will only further add to the circular firing squad mentality I have seen him and others on this site rage against when the Dem's don't do it.

10. I Say It's National DU Party Night
While I like Will Pitt's idea of boycotting the SOTU...I don't like the precedence, as I remember how painful it must have been for the Repugnicans to sit through all those great Clinton speeches and having to applaud their biggest enemy. I've alway thought "polite applause" works best...just sit there and only clap when needed...but be seen...be a presence in the room.

Now for the rest of us who can't get into the Capitol, asshat's speech means there'll be nothing to watch on TV...so why not make it a DU meet-up night. Surely with the 70,000 plus members on this site and other communities, we can all get together around a beverage and put faces to screen names and maybe some action to words. It's time to take all this angst and energy and turn it into action.

Cheers...
