Sen Chambliss-South Could Have Won Civil War If They'd Had Better Intell |
|
Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) argued last week that the South could have won the Civil War if the Confederates had just had better intelligence. Sources told Roll Call that Chambliss said, “We need better intelligence. If we had better intelligence in the Civil War we’d be quoting Jefferson Davis, not Lincoln.” http://www.rollcall.com/issues/hoh/http://thinkprogress.org/2006/09/18/thinkfast-september-18-2006/

3. That's a wierd statement |
|
On the face of it it might be true - but using the confederates as the example? It strikes me that some in the Republican Party have concluded that a return to Overt racism won't hurt them. Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

Then it's up to us to prove them wrong. If only the Democratic Party were still alive...

5. What's this "we" shit, Saxby? |
|
You still fighting the Civil War? Your side, or at least the one you favor, lost. Get over it.
From now on, when you use the word "we," you better be talking about EVERYONE in the United States and not some Johnny Reb ancestors.

6. What? Did the South not know that the North could put three |
|
times as many troops into any battle, anywhere, as could the South? Did the South not know that the Northern troops were much better fed, clothed, supplied and serviced than any Southern troops? Did the South not know that the North had a NAVY - I mean a REAL one, not the two tubs and a paddle-wheeler the South had? Did the South not know that the North could produce a hundred times the amount of war materiel as could the South? And (just for humor's sake) what piece, or group of pieces, of intelligence could have secured a Southern victory against their being completely out gunned and out generaled? What an idiot...

Since we're talking 'bout ol' Saxby, we might as well use the vernacular.

8. Proves he has no knowledge of history. |
|
The South had no industrial base, that is what cost them the war. They had to get their ship (Mobile) from England, likewise their rifles. The North had manufacturing capabilities, a fleet and the wherewithal to fight an extended war.
Chambliss is pus. I can't wait to see him exit the Senate, his term is expires in two years doesn't it? Of course with the new improved voting system that may be moot...

11. "If WE had better intelligence in the Civil War we'd be quoting Jeff Davis |

Note the use of WE.
Note similar accounts of George Allen (especially the "watermelon reference").
Note how Democratic leaders are too unsure of themselves to denounce Confederate revivalism, fearing it will "alienate people for whom the Confederacy is a part of their heritage". Never mind that anyone who understands that the Confederates LOST and DESERVED to lose, will not take offense, even if they are a Southerner.
I have yet to see a single ad on TV denouncing George Allen for his "watermelon reference" ("If it had been a watermelon, such-and-such Redskins player would have caught it.") Why is that?

Jefferson Davis must've had pretty good intelligence after all.
Those "bitter enders" were a tenacious bunch of illegal combatants, seeing as how they kept the South destabilized right thru the 1920s.

|
And no, not some revisionist shit from a right wing shill. All we had was "King Cotton," and one lonely munitions plant. Plus, the South was outnumbered and the blockade was beginning to take its toll. No way in hell the South could win.

14. I cannot see any logical way that the Confederates could have won. |
|
Even if they could have, the nation was impoverished. Inflation was rampant, starvation was rampant. The limited resources of the government were being poured into maintaining the war effort. And the same grievance that had helped lead to secession in the first place (resistance to the federal government) was plaguing the Confederate government as well.
The "quotable" Jefferson Davis set a national day of prayer and the governor of Georgia, angered that the federal government was usurping his authority, promptly set a different date. Some states even contemplated seceding from the Confederacy! By the end of the war, even slaves were being drummed into the Confederate military. Slaves fighting to stay slaves? How long could that dichotomy have existed before somebody's head exploded?
I love this brand of revisionism. If one thing had changed, the Confederacy could have won. All of these "what ifs" make a faulty assumption: namely, that the Confederacy was a viable proposition in the first place. It wasn't.
