Is it a small sign of hope that Bush actually wants "permission"
to torture? I am somewhat surprised they care a thing about inconvenient matters like international law. Am I being naive?

1. He only asked for permission
because the Court told him what he was doing was illegal. Don't be naive. Bush is a war criminal.

3. And why isn't his smarmy ass on trial, in jail, etc.
This is really pissing me off. If it were any other world leader he'd be crying and stomping and fuming and pounding his fists.

2. CIA peeps have refused to break the law
I think that's why he is asking permission and trying to change laws.

I see it as an admission of guilt.

4. It's all about damage control. Bush is trying to take steps to protect
himself and this is just one of them. Others are classifying information so it isn't available to others, and picking an "issue of the week" to take everyone's attention of the real issues.

And todays' MSM is happy to cooperate in every way possible.

5. I get this awful thought from time to time
that these "secret prisons" are for his own personal sadistic needs. It's a creepy feeling.

6. He is trying to save his ass from a war atrocities trial, nothing else.
He needs them to "clarify" illegal techniques he has ALREADY authorized.

7. "Can I torture 'em, can I blow 'em up like frogs? - PLEASE!!!!"
"It's so funny to watch them say "PLEASE DON'T KILL ME"..."

8. He's been torturing without permission for years
He doesn't want permission, he wants legal protection and to make the whole of government just as guilty as he is...that way they won't touch him since doing so would expose their own guilt.

If Bush can make everyone an accomplice, it's harder to point a finger at him alone.

A Congress that grants Bush legal protection for war crimes is not a Congress that will impeach Bush for war crimes...it's ugly...but it's the reality.

12. I agree, but isn't it possible, no one will DO what he wants
anymore, and they are telling him no, not unless this is specifically stated as legal?

15. This is what I am wondering.
I know he doesn't give a shit about anything but himself and his cronies, but something has him worried - even just the craven ass covering that this clearly is, is a sign of hope to me. Somebody has told him no. Perhaps for the first time in his sorry selfish life.

10. It's easier to ask forgiveness than to get permission
Have always thought that was a saying coined for the likes of * and his cabal. He just wants them to say it's okay to keep on doing it and they don't make him stop.

11. The timing is about the elections
Back when the Court ruled against him six or so months I wrote here that he would push a bill through Congress right before the November elections.

Why did they wait until now to do this? Why didn't the Repubs do it back when they lost in the courts?

The question now is will the Dems go along with them and if they don't then will the Repubs succeed in painting them as "soft on terrorism." That appears to be the Repubs campaign statergy.

14. No. He's looking to cover his ass for crimes already committed.
