Former Gov. McGreevy talks about gay sex scandal on Oprah today
I watched the program this morning (airs early in Chicago market) and found it riveting. McGreevy was so brutally open and honest. It provided a lot of insight into why so many gays still feel forced into the closet and the lies they tell themselves and their families. Even if you don't like Oprah, it's worth watching because he really carries the show.

Just two years ago, New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey was a family man with a beautiful wife and two daughters by his side. He was also one of the most powerful governors in the country, with dreams of the White House. For decades he worked to shape his public image, all while hiding a secret he thought would destroy his career and his life—a secret he finally revealed to the world.

1. He's a crook who appointed his lover to a six figure job
The object of his affection was not qualified to be head of homeland security for the state of New Jersey. He used taxpayer money to buy off his honey and put people at risk.

If that lover was a woman would you have any sympathy for him?

4. Golan Cipel
t's important to note that Golan has stated publicly that he was sexually harassed. He has also denied that he ever attempted to blackmail Jim and he also says he never filed any lawsuits against Jim. Golan was investigated for extortion, but he hasn't been charged. He's insisted publicly that he is not gay and he contends that he had a non-consensual sexual relationship with Jim.

3. I'm not defending McGreevy's actions
as governor. He didn't deserve to be kicked out of office for being gay, but for making that appointment alone.

If you see sympathy in my OP, it comes from seeing a human being feeling forced by society to live a secret life.

And perhaps I'm easily fooled, but he seemed very genuine in his remorse for all that he had done and people who he had hurt. That said, I would never put him in a position of public trust ever again. As a human being, though, I hope he can find peace and happiness and the redemption that he is seeking.
