The advantage of a highly regulated, mandatory community militia system is that a) it does not lend itself easily to imperial ambitions unlike the more Prussian model the US operates on; b) it's a good defense against external invasion in that the local militias know the terrain in more detail than the opponent could possibly hope to know; and c) it keeps gun accident death rates down in that people are required by law to undergo gun safety/training as a part of national service to the militias. If you want to live with guns, the American model is a failure compared to the Swiss model.
