ANYONE HEAR THAT? Specters on the fence???!!!!

A caller on Randi Rhodes said that Specter is on a list (from Hartman's show I believe) as a Senator who is 'on the fence on Alito!

Is that true?

Does anyone have that 'list'?

Who is on the fence? Who should we be calling?

Any info would be appreciated!

7. RE: Chafee, he's alsoconcerned about environmental issues;
Alito isn't.

In light of what has been learned in the hearings, I trust that the American public and Rhode Island Senators Lincoln Chafee and Jack Reed now realize that Judge Alito is an activist judge, who historically favors industrial polluters at the expense of people seeking to uphold and enforce federal environmental and public-health safeguards. Fortunately, Senator Chafee recognizes this threat. The Providence Journal reported on Jan. 9 ("Undecided on vote, Chafee has questions") that "Chafee specifically fears that Alito would vote to trim environmental-protection law."

3. Go here -
http://www.gopchoice.org/index.asp

Specter and Chaffee are for choice and sit on the board of this organization - which is publicly coming out against Alito.

8. Chafee, Snowe, Collins and Specter!
Operatives on both sides generally agree that, absent some significant revelation or development at the confirmation hearings, three of the 55 Senate Republicans might consider voting against Alito: Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, and Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine.

The following Senators were applauded by Republicans for Choice, so they might be worth calling:

Republicans for Choice, PAC would like to thank the eight Republican members of the US Senate who chose to buck the President and vote their conscience. Their vote to allow doctors overseas who receive UNFPA Funds to decide whether to discuss the sensitive issue of abortion with their patients took real courage.

9. I hope it's true
If Specter, the chairman of the committee which oversaw the hearings, voted NO that would be a powerful voice. I doubt he would support a filibuster though.

10. this is not really news
Specter said as much at the conclusion of the hearings. He said he would vote yes to get Alito out of committee, because he owed that to the president and to the members of the republican caucus. He then stated that his vote on the floor would be determined by his individual conscience. He has been in play since day one.

Think back to right after the 2004 election. Specter had a radio interview (can't remember if it was Imus or not) where he stated that he didn't think it was part of the repubican agenda to overturn Roe. He said he didn't think they would ever do it. He took great heat for that comment and almost lost his chairmanship for this committee due to the outrage from the right. He had to remove himself from the spotlight for quite a while after that comment.

I remember the reaction here on DU about that comment, so someone else should remember the incident too.

13. Here's who to contact:
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 05:17 PM by Wordie
It is a thread with all Gang of 14 (moderate Dems and Repubs) contact info:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=218425&mesg_id=218425

And it includes contact info for Specter.

Specter is VERY concerned about any Judge who might usurp the power of the Congress. I think he has primarily been concerned about liberal activist judges, but he is a moderate, and somewhat of an independent thinker, so who knows? I don't have any other specific info.
