So It Was ROVE'S IDEA to Blow Plame's Cover >>>
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 05:27 PM by Stephanie

Your day draws nigh, Karl. Your goose is cooked. I bet you have a hard time sleeping these days. Who will drive the Porsche while you're in jail?

Last week, this State Department official said that a meeting took place in the office of the Vice President after Libby read the memo, to decide how they would respond to Wilson's increasing public criticism about the administration.

"There was a major, major concern about the polls, the public response, that Mr. Wilson could cause enormous damage," the retired senior State Department official said.

***

The current State Department official said the INR memo was discussed at length during the meeting Grossman attended at the White House. That meeting may have been the first time other White House officials, including Karl Rove, White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card, and other unknown administration officials learned that Valerie Plame was Wilson's wife and that she worked at the CIA in a covert capacity.

All of the sources interviewed separately for this story said they were told that Karl Rove was the person who first suggested using the media to "turn the tables on Wilson." The officials wouldn't identify the person who told them this. The decision, however, was made during a meeting that took place between the White House Iraq Group.

"There was a discussion about what to do about Mr. Wilson," the current State Department official said. "There was a decision to leak a story to the press - I think a few journalists - about the Wilson trip, that it was a non-issue because his wife set it up for him. They were going to show that Wilson and his wife were Democrats. Can you imagine? They were going to say 'don't listen to them, they're partisan.' It was a coordinated effort to turn him into the story. Much to my surprise, it worked."

6. To me, that sounds like a "limited hangout".

I'm having a hard time believing that they thought they'd get much out of discrediting Wilson.

I think Plame, herself, may have been the target so that Brewster Jennings work could be disrupted.

But I'm totally guessing.

7. Rove's motives may have been different than the neocons
But it would take a mind like Rove's to suggest blowing a CIA agent's cover, don't you think? And at that point the neocons probably decided it served their purposes quite well.

40. It sounds like
this source is pointing a finger at Rove. A couple thoughts: first, we can expect sources that are closer to Cheney-Libby to stress Rove's role. And, indeed, there is no doubt that of this group, Rove would be the one who would try to show his talent for manipulating the media. Yet we know that Rove would not have known about Valerie Plame without Cheney-Libby telling him that Wilson's wife was CIA. In doing that, within the context of WHIG meetings geared towards "responding" to the threat of Joseph Wilson, Cheney-Libby KNEW Rove would put forward a plan to manipulate the press.

Rove is certainly guilty of the crimes that are being associated with him on this thread. But do not overlook the fact that Cheney-Libby were exploiting Rove, in a very real sense. They knew the danger that Plame and BJ posed.

58. I believe that
is a criminal charge. We can't make criminal charges. We can lobby for the appropriate legal entity to; in this case, it would be the Attorney General. Since Mr. Fitzgerald is investigating, that is where it stands.

Citizens can file civil cases. I think that we should be moving in that direction. The suit filed by the ACLU is a wonderful example. I am a bit more fond of the Center for Constitutional Rights myself; they have also filed a suit. I would be surprised, for example, if a significant number of DU participants haven't been examined by a federal agency (though not likely the NSA). I think it would be worth people's consideration.

This still doesn't make sense though that rather than simply attacking his credibility by labeling him as a partisan anti-war Democrat, they felt the need to expose her covert CIA role.

13. Rove did it cuz he fell into Cheney's trap
and did his dirty work for him under a delusion that he was really hurting Wilson.

What got hurt was our ability to keep an eye on movement of some bad shit. That made the world safer for terrorists and more profitable for Cheney's pals.

Rove, in the game you were playing with Dick, you look to be losing. Hope you have some good stuff on him to offer up for your ass.

44. It would make sense. Rove loves to think he's the sharpest kid in class
and Cheney is one mean, sly bastard. Seems likely he is a tad pissed about Scooter getting indicted too.

There is a chess tournament going on. Rove v Cheney, the good guys in national service, spooks who really care v the neocons who are selling the nation out, Frist/DeLay v human values, Gonzales v the rule of law, the people v the corporate media, bush v his addictions, Snotty Scotty v reality, Reid v Congressional Hooligans, Helen Thomas v evil doers in high places... yep there is a lot going on.

The fact that so much shit is hitting the fan at once convinced me the good guy spooks are ahead on points. Rove is NOT as smart as Cheney and is goin down, but he may have something to make the case for major conspiracy. If so, Fitz will be a busy, busy man.

29. You know I am sure Bush lied in his deposition.
Because all along he was saying that he didn't know who did it and he wanted to get to the bottom of it. But then that Daily News story came out where Bush was furious with Rove for getting caught. So I bet if he was not involved in the crime he at least participated in the coverup to some extent. Like probably lying about whether he knew who did it.

If Bush turns his back on Rove when Rove goes down, it could turn into the nastiest divorce case in history.
