Thoughts about Kansas State University...
I'd like to hear from others who know more about KSU. I'm certainly not an expert, but
I do have a bit of insight, because I attended Iowa State University.

Iowa State University, like KSU--is a land-grant university. Because these schools offer
programs in agriculture studies, ag science--and also have prestigious engineering schools--the student population tends to be incredibly conservative. Land-grant universities attempt to
attract kids from rural areas--encouraging studies in dairy science, seed science, and other agriculture areas. I'm certainly not saying that no one majored in english or history. Some did. However, a large contingent of conservative people from very small towns were drawn to ISU, and
probably are to KSU as well.

Before attending Iowa State University, I first attended the University of Iowa--a bastion of liberalism. I was in culture shock when I first arrived on the ISU campus. Most were incredibly conservative. The liberals and activists--what few there were--really stood out. You knew who they were. That says a lot, especially when ISU had around 25,000 students.

Even the Dean of Admissions--whom I interviewed for an article about the conservatism at ISU--
said that land-grant universities attract many kids from small, rural communities--about 70 percent of the total student population. He mentioned KSU and Auburn as having similar demographics.

There's a reason that Bush selected KSU. The student population is conservative, compared to most campuses. Many students probably hail from small, rural areas. Furthermore, it would be fairly easy to keep activists and known liberals out--or at least exclude them from the group who sat close and were allowed to ask questions.

Just some thoughts. Others, I'm sure will have better insight--especially those who have attended KSU--or live in the state.
