6. it was in L'Est Republicain
PARIS (Reuters) - France's Defense Ministry said on Saturday a secret service report saying al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had died could not be confirmed but said it would launch an inquiry into the leak of secret documents.

The Defense Ministry issued the statement after a French regional newspaper, L'Est Republicain, published a report quoting a French secret service report as saying Saudi Arabia is convinced al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan last month.

"The information published this morning in the L'Est Republicain newspaper relating to the supposed death of Osama bin Laden cannot be confirmed," the Defense Ministry said.

"The Defense Minister (Michele Alliot-Marie) has asked that an inquiry be carried out to determine the origin of the leak that can be punished by criminal charges."

7. Not if He died From ESRD or Any Other Non-USA Causes
Many believe he's been on dialysis for years (I have no idea if that's true or not, but considering how unpleasant it can be, one hopes), but if he died from anything other than Uncle Sam putting a flag up his ass, it won't help the Republicants.

37. Wasn't he on Dialysis BECAUSE he was wounded in Tora Bora???
If so, can't we (er, well, Karl Rove) claim to have inflicted on him a slow and painful death?

I mean, we could have given him the "Shanghai cocktail" or something that would cause him to die in a certain timeframe, like in one of those cheesy counterterrorism flicks... I am thinking of "Agent Buck Rogers of D.A.R.E." or whatever it was called... Anyone see that movie?

42. He was in the American Hospital in Dubai in July 2001 getting treatment
for his chronic kidney disease. I believe dialysis has been a way of life for him, for a long time.

Up until about 6 months ago I had believed him dead due to several reports from December 2001 saying he had died in Tora Bora.

However, I had a dialogue with a woman whose husband had housed him in Quetta in 2003, and that's where he's been staying for the most part.

It's hard to say just what the truth is.

38. Why woul France, Pakistan ISI, British MI5 want BBC to release the news
That the chief enemy leader, who has been in hiding for years at a time we are doing poorly in the war effort, and whos survival has motivated the only support for the war, has died of natural causes? That would be demoralizing to the war effort.

27. It is an attempt
to get him to respond, thus creating an opportunity to locate him. There have been, of course, rumors like this in the past. Some are likely started by people hoping to discourage a continued search for him. Others are simply as foolish as those that claim he is being treated for kidney disease, or that he is 6'27" tall.

34. Yes.
Actually there are numerous reliable sources that make clear the kidney business is a myth. More, there is not a single reliable source that indicates otherwise.

I would point out two sentences from Peter Bergen's book: "There has been considerable speculation about the state of bin Laden's health and numerous reports that he suffers from life-threatening kidney disease. This is nonsense." (pages 319-20) Bergen's "The Osama bin Laden I Know" contains plenty of back-up information on this. There is not a single intelliggence person who has been involved in the search for bin Laden who considers the kidney rumors as anything but a myth.

39. Look at pictures
of him that show him next to others. Unless he is on the al Qaeda basketball team, then the reports of his being 6'27" are also slight stretches of the truth.

There are several high quality sources of information on bin Laden. Bergen's book is very good. The two best books are by Michael Scheuer; "Imperial Hubris" and "Through Our Enemies' Eyes" (revised edition) are must reads.

Also, although the author is not among my favorite people, Yossef Bodansky's "Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America" is worth reading.

There are many myths, and a substantial amount of disinformation about bin Laden, that are unfortunately accepted as fact in this country.

40. Nonsense! He Fights To The Finish When He Eats His Spinach.
"It cannot be! You fell."

"Through Tora... and Bora....

"From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak, I fought him, the Taliban of Bin Laden. Until at last, I smote my enemy and threw down his ruin upon the mountainside.

Darkness took him, and he strayed out of thought and time...

...but it was not the end. I felt life in him again!

"But he was destroyed. Bin Laden was Destroyed!"

"No... brettdale. The spirit of bin Laden endured. His life force is bound to the WMD, and the WMD survived. Bin Laden has returned. His fedayeen have multiplied... His Fortress of Tora Bora is rebuilt in the land of Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden is coming for the WMD. He is seeking it... seeking it... all his thought is bent upon it! They are one... Osama Bin Laden, and Saddam Hussein. Brettdale... he must never find it!"

44. Cannonfire's theory on "why now": Also Sky News = Fox News
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 08:51 AM by HamdenRice
Cannonfire's blog has a couple of interesting speculations on why this would be leaked now, whether it is true or not.

First, the Democrats have recently started using, as a campaign issue, that five years after 9/11 the Bushistas still have not captured or killed the alleged perpetrator of the worst mass murder in US history. If he is dead, that issue goes away.

Second, the Bush regime is trying to convince the gullible American public to divert their view from al Qaeda as the main threat to Iran (just as they did with Sadam).

Cannonfire.blogspot.com

Aside from what Cannonfire has to say, my own observation is that it's kind of like waving video games in front of a kid with ADD. Look here! The bad Arab in the cave! No, look here! The bad Iraqi Arab with the Hitler mustache who tried to kill my dad! No look over there! The mullahs who want to incinerate Manhattan with a nuke!

Keep in mind that Sky News is owned by Rupert Murdoch, which is to say Sky News is Fox news, which is to say that whatever they are reporting, whether true or not, has primarily a propoganda purpose rather than a news purpose.
