Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
You people.

This ain't over! This ain't really begun!

What are you doing? Squabbling over Hugo, or smoking, or replying to the obvious trolls.

Hey! Fuck that!

There's this bill in the Senate that you seem to think is a done deal! Yeah I mean this one:
S.3929
Title: A bill to authorize military commissions to bring terrorists to justice, to strengthen and modernize terrorist surveillance capabilities, and for other purposes.
Sponsor: Sen McConnell, Mitch (introduced 9/22/2006) Cosponsors (1)
Latest Major Action: 9/22/2006 Introduced in the Senate. Read the first time. pursuant to the order of September 21, 2006, as modified on September 22, 2006. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under Read the First Time.

Got it? Read First Time. There hasn't been floor debate yet. We haven't heard from Democratic leadership yet. All we got is the 3, or was it 4, republic 'rebels', and the deal they cut.

If ever there was a time to use dry powder, *this* is *it*!

This means we have to stop chasing our tails and lend our dear party some spine. How?

By calling them, faxing them, and letting them know how disgusting it is that we are even having this 'debate' in *our* country.

Now let's go build an Eat Me cake-mobile!

Oct 5th.

29. Roosevelt is a Dutch name.
It is not a German name. BTW the Pennsylvania "Dutch" are not really Dutch! This is a distortion of "Deutsch" meaning German. So we should call these people Pennsylvania Germans. I know because I am descended from them.

Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Otter: Germans?

16. Scene inside, still looking for a clip.
Here's the scene:
D-Day (Bruce McGill): War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter (Tim Matheson): Germans?
Boon (Peter Riegert): Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go! What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer -
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.
D-Day: Let's do it.
Bluto: LET'S DO IT!!

Rip John, Rip.

17. Sheesh... Is everyone too young to remember "Animal House"?
I can't believe so many people don't recognize one of the all-time classic movie quotes!

"Why a duck?"

"We'll always have Paris."

"Luke, I am your father."

"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

"Hello, I am Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

"I'll have what she's having."

"The truth? You can't handle the truth!"

etc., etc...

24. It's from the Marx Brothers movie, Cocoanuts.
(At the resort hotel, looking at a map.)

Groucho: Now here is a little peninsula, and here is a viaduct leading over to the mainland.

Chico: Why a duck?

(more back-and-forth between the two ... )

All right, why a duck? Why a duck, why-a no chicken?

Groucho: Well, I don't know why-a no chicken. I'm a stranger here myself. ...

22. Every Democratic Senator Must "Blow Powder"...
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 02:01 PM by Dunvegan
...on this Mephistophelian, unhallowed, un-American abomination of a bill.

They must, each and every Democratic, go down with their objection on the Congressional Record, with their rational, moral, and constitutional opinion that torture is not an American value. That this bill is unacceptable. They must go down objecting.

Give them nothing easily, for the easier it is to get, the greedier they become.

We've seen this before, not so long ago.

There were slow, steady inroads into reason...and then there was none.

After Checkoslovakia...Poland? After Iraq...Iran?

Utterly unacceptable, and so "retroactively" transparent in device, at that.

Go on the record as strongly as possible - No to contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention

40. I'm one of the guilty ones (off-topic responses), but I hoped I helped a
little by at least keeping it kicked up earlier.

As for my ON-topic response: HELL YES! And I apologize for not expressing my gratitude earlier, because I really appreciate what you posted and it's a damn important message.

And just so you know your effort wasn't entirely wasted on me, I pledge to write and call my senators & congressman this week to express my outrage and demand that they block this abomination of a bill.

So here's another kick (I already recommended it earlier). Thanks again for an excellent post. (but perhaps too amusing for its own good?)

Best wishes,
sw

48. I've emailed both of my Senators . . .
Byrd and Rockefeller. Here's the message:

Dear Senator Byrd:
I have read with alarm this week about the Republican compromise on S.3929, the bill to authorize military commissions to bring terrorists to justice, to strengthen and modernize terrorist surveillance capabilities, and for other purposes.

Are we now a nation that legalizes torture? Are we a nation that follows in the footsteps of the Gestapo, the Soviet secret police, or the Viet Cong? When did we become "the bad guys"?

Please, Senator Byrd, I ask you on behalf of myself and for the children of West Virginia, use your eloquence to oppose, to defeat this bill.

Sincerely,
Staph
