Wish he would've mentioned that he had a Senate entirely controlled by Republicans...which has been the case now for the last 12 fucking years.

Secondly William Cohen was Clinton's secretary of defense A REPUBLICAN.

Remember the line in Black Hawk Down when Garrison says they were denied by Washington the equipment they requested to properly execute the Bakarah Market operation?

That was Cohen's call.

Point is despite Republicans blocking Clinton every step of the way he still got far more done in weeks than Bush and his Republicans have been able to get done in 6 years and that's not including the Reagan years. On top of that they have pushed us BACKWARDS in establishing a true initiative to defend our country.

1. The SecDef during the Black Hawk Down incident was Les Aspin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Aspin

Criticism and final days in office

In September General Powell asked Aspin to approve the request of the U.S. commander in Somalia for tanks, armored vehicles and AC-130 Spectre gunships for his forces. Aspin turned down the request. Shortly thereafter Aideed's forces in Mogadishu killed 18 U.S. soldiers and wounded more than 75 in attacks that also resulted in the shooting down of three U.S. helicopters and the capture of one pilot. In the face of severe congressional criticism, Aspin admitted that in view of what had happened he had made a mistake, but stated that the request for armored equipment had been made within the context of delivering humanitarian aid to Somalia rather than protecting troops. In an appearance before a congressional committee to answer questions about the Somalia disaster, Aspin made an unfavorable impression and appeared weak in response to the detailed probing and criticism of his performance. The president publicly defended Aspin but made clear that the White House was not involved in the decision not to send armor reinforcements to Somalia. Several members of Congress called on Clinton to ask for Aspin's resignation.

On 15 December 1993 President Clinton announced Aspin's resignation, for personal reasons. Given the problems that Aspin encountered during his short term, most obviously the losses in Mogadishu, observers assumed that the president had asked him to step down. Speculation in the media centered on the Somalia embarrassment and on Aspin's differences with the Office of Management and Budget over how much the Defense budget should be cut. The secretary's health problems, of course, may well have also been a factor. One news magazine stated that Aspin's major handicap was "neither his famously unmilitary bearing nor his inability to discipline himself or the enormous Pentagon bureaucracy; it is his politician's instinct for the middle ground on defense issues." Aspin continued to serve as secretary of defense until February 3, 1994, when William J. Perry took office.

2. And Whose Fault Was That?
Yes, "Senate entirely controlled by Republicans...which has been the case now for the last 12 fucking years.". But whose fault is that? It seems to me that the Dems' adoption of the Clinton's Golden Triangle (with a side order of sucking up to the Predator Class) has ensured this.

Newt was unceremoniously dumped by the Rethugs eight years ago.

7. I think the Repubs took over Congress on 2 issues:
Gays in the military

Rise in Taxes

The Repubs ran on fear then just as they did in 2002 and 2004. I wasn't fooled but a lot of people were.

8. Puzzling Evidence
There have been many tax hikes in history - and most did not lead to a change in Congress. Truman integrated the military - and he was re-elected. Incidentally, Truman also told us why we lost Congress:

“Given the choice between a Republican and someone who acts like a Republican, people will vote for the real Republican all the time”

10. The best I remember there was no Fox TV
or Rush Limbaugh in 1948.

I was in Alabama at that time and there was a Dixiecrat movement in the Presidential election because of Truman's stand on race.

However, the people in Congress were safe as Democrats (the party that opposed Lincoln, who freed the slaves) because Lee Atwater had not arrived on the scene and the Republican party had not been taken over by the racists.

(Supporters of Steele for the Maryland Senate are reminding African Americans of the racist past of the Democratic party. I hate that they are doing this because these Steel supporters are punishing the Democrats who changed their racist views and rewarding the Republicans who gave cover to the racists--Remember when Reagan went to the part of Mississippi where the 3 Civil Rights workers were murdered? All of the white people in the South understood that Reagan was supporting the mindset that condoned these murders.)

You are making a big mistake if you underestimate the fears and prejudices of the voters. I am very emotional in my feelings about Republican lies, but I think that if we are going to be successful in getting rid of Bush and Bush clones we should be realists and we should use our brains.

11. Now You're on to Something
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 11:10 AM by MannyGoldstein
I don't disregard the fears and prejudices of voters. Good politicians win elections be convincing voters that they're a solution. The Dems keep banking on triangulation, the art of saying "Yeah, I suck - I lie, I'm corrupt, I screw the Middle Class and the Poor - but who else you gonna' vote for, sucker - the Republican is even worse, and my Democratic opponents are called "unelectable" - sucks for you!". This has't worked.

I agree that Rush is a problem - but that being said, there are always demagogues as scumbag campaign managers. The 1930s had Father Coughlin, for example. But the American People finally woke up and saw the light. I hope we do again.

4. here's Tenet
explaining why the 1999 airstrike was aborted.

CIA Director George Tenet later said this in explaining why the US did not go through with the missile strike:

"The third complicating factor here is you might have wiped out half the royal family in the UAE in the process, which I'm sure entered into everybody's calculation in all this."
