Do you know where Manhattan, Kansas, is?
Manhattan, Kansas, is in the middle of fucking nowhere.

Kansans, I know you love your state, but face it: Manhattan is Bum Fuck Egypt.

The Pioneers and Rangers that typically attend Bush's speeches don't like to go to Bum Fuck Egypt, and most of them don't live in Kansas anyway, so why go there?

Manhattan has two attributes that make it highly desirable for a Bush speech: it IS in the middle of fucking nowhere (which means the un-American hippies who protest his speeches, as well as the patriotic hippies, patriotic rednecks and everyone else who doesn't have a kool-aid IV line, probably won't go there), and it's half an hour from Fort Riley. His advance team can just get a list of two thousand soldiers who wear suits to church every Sunday, have them put on those suits, and seat them in the auditorium far enough back that you can't really see their shitty haircuts. That will fill the hall about three-quarters full, which you can dress out to the stage just by inviting College Republicans--in Kansas that club's probably very popular.

1. It's right up the highway from Fred Phelps' compound
I almost went there for Architecture school. I'm so glad I chose to go to KU instead.

4. yep
it has a by most standards small state school to it's credit. I have a friend who went there for undegrad - said it was a step above JuCo.

One would think that KC would be a better choice. I understand why they didn't choose Lawrence but why not Topeka sor something?

Manhattan?

6. I totally disagree
with this. I took microbiology with pre-med and pre-vet students...tough course, smart guys.

8. good to hear
and I meant no offense. Re-reading my posts I see where of course it was taken with offense. I apologize. I was recalling that she hated it and found it very unsatisfying. Then again, she wasn't in hard sciences.

12. It is not
an easy school. A step above JuCo? Hardly.

Of course, by definition a four year school IS a step above JuCo, but that wouldn't be the point, would it.

Again, my apologies, surely there was a better way to have expressed her sentiments, or, rather, I should not have expressed then at all.

16. I had not thought of it that way, lol.
It is OK. My son goes to school there until the end of this year. He is miserable there mostly because of the nature of the student body.

I hope he is going somewhere fun from there, yet still of good quality. And in further retrospect she was a shitty refernce point. She did undergrad in 3 years and a PhD in another 3.5. One helluva lot smarter than me on my very best days. :D

take care,

:hi:

15. Fair enough
Then, more to the point, why the Landon Lecture Series? Hardly fitting of their usual caliber of lecturer. He is better suited to Army posts and donor luncheons.

Most of the rest of the state is pretty red -- true?

7. Lawrence and parts of KC are Liberal
But the rest of the state (sparsely populated farm land) is Bush country.

5. I was stationed there
for four years...contrary to what you think it is in a beautiful part of Kansas. Rivers, lakes, hills etc. It's very close to Topeka (state capitol), Ft. Riley is down the road and Junction City on the other side of Ft. Riley. It really isn't in the middle of no where. If he'd spoke at Salina or Abilene I'd agree.
I didn't mind being stationed there and I lived in Manhattan. K-State is great I took many classes from cool libs there. No doubt he chose it cause he's getting some heat for always being in front of military audiences. At K-State he could have a mixed audience. I heard though that people had to pay. One lady (a lib) called Ed this afternoon and said she paid $30.00 cause she wanted to see if he was as dumb as she thought. Her idea was reinforced.

9. Bush told one of his stupid jokes
on election night 2004--when told that he lost New York he quipped, "But I won Manhatten" and then he did that awful chuckle of his--but he meant Manhatten, KS.

11. Well
I happen to love the middle of nowhere and it is in one of the most beautiful middle of nowheres around.

It is an Ag school with a big large (and small) animal vet school. Many of the students are from farming communities but not all of them. It is not all farming/ranching in other words but it is known mostly for those two things.

There was a pretty darned good protest there considering. Many people who live there love it for reasons other than the political climate.

Bum Fuck Egypt seems a little harsh to me but whatever, we have often been called worse here just for living in Kansas.

That was awful. They saved our old Lab, the sight of our old Golden and removed a tumor the size of a basketball from my best broodmares ovary. I think they are fabulous there and very very kind.

Were you able to take your doggie with you?

How are things? :hi:

the trains and go into stores and restaurants. He even has his own passport!

I'm OK. Just wishing for Spring. And you?

His own passpost? I'll bet he is really proud of that. :)

It has not been winter here yet but Spring will be nice. Only one short cold snap with a bugger of a snow. We are getting ticks all over the dogs now and I have flys at the farm. Interesting weather.

19. Well yes I do, it's somewhat isolated.
And it's certainly no Lawrence.

Having grown up in Wichita and Overland park I can say that while Kanas does take a lot of shit here my relatives are predominately old school FDR Dems.

Of course they're all in their later years now which is sad beyond belief...

25. The middle of nowhere in KS? Try Sharon Springs, Sabetha or St. Paul
I've been to all three - now THOSE are truly back of beyond.
