Homecoming forces veterans to adjust mindset

There are few things more structured, or intense, than being in the military during a time of war.

For former soldiers returning from Iraq, coming home means changing from a mindset molded by wartime service to civilian life.

Joe Herscher served in Iraq from February 2004 to the end of September that same year. Forty-six Marines out of his battalion of 900 with were killed in those seven months, he said.

"I don't think we're ever going to win," said Herscher, a 25-year-old Kankakee resident. "It's not about winning; it's about giving them their freedom and slowly pulling out of there."
