3. No. I really didn't.
I did when the run-up first started, but by the time Colin Powell did his little dog and pony show at the UN, I was convinced that there weren't any WMD.

7. Not me
I considered the sources and said,

BULLSHIT!

I also read the rebuttals from the UN, and the weapons inspectors.

I was clear then, and it is clear now, that the invasion of Iraq was pre-planned

and the WMD story was just a convenient excuse.

21. I guess this administration's response to being told they lied
will always be "I really resent that. You know, I really resent that."

Well, big deal! Most people DO resent being called on a lie! Is the person who calls them on it supposed to feel guilty?

I just love how they edited the tape right after she says that they thought Saddam had the weapons because "he used them." We never got to hear her explanation of HOW SOMEONE COULD HAVE USED SOMETHING HE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE!

Not because I know anything about WMD, but because every WEAPONS INSPECTOR I ever saw quoted seemed to be quite skeptical. Plus, there were those tales about Cheneyites pressuring CIA analysts... Then there was the speech to the UN about the aluminum tubes being proof of nuclear intent that came days after it was mentioned in several media outlets that people who know about aluminum tubes said they were proof of nothing...

Plus, I still don't know what a weapon of mass destruction IS. I'm always skeptical when people tell me to be afraid of some undefined boogey man.

31. They have to maintain their little fascist fantasies. . .
Edited on Sun Sep-24-06 07:07 PM by pat_k
Belief people are very strange creatures.

When belief defines reality, there is no reality to test those beliefs against.

The belief that "everybody knows" X is at the core of all their beliefs. That is, they believe what they believe "everybody knows" (with everybody being the people from which they adopt their beliefs or a sufficient number of the people "out there"), and they will believe that until they notice that "everybody knows" something else.

They can believe something today that is diametrically opposed to what they believed yesterday. When your belief defines your reality, you can turn on a dime, because your beliefs are self-contained. No pesky facts interfere.

When polls take an enormous swing this or that way, it is because enough people "out there" have come to a particular conclusion to create an "everybody knows" reality that sweeps up the belief people.

It is impossible for folks who operate on knowledge to actually "get it", but the actions and behavior of belief-people makes a bizzaro-world kind of sense when you accept that their reality really is defined by their beliefs.

They can also simultaneous hold completely conflicting sets of beliefs. (Beliefs define reality at a given moment; that "reality" can change moment to moment.)

For example:

  • We had to sell the war for the good of the world. (Why? Because so and so, the people I adopt my beliefs from, say so.)

  • To sell the war, we must suppress any intelligence that conflicts with the agreed narrative.

  • The narrative is the reality.

  • There is a shitload of conflicting intelligence we we must suppress to protect the narrative. . .

And round-and-round the go. . .

33. Of Course I Didn't Believe It
But why doesn't one interviewer say that there are many people who didn't believe. Most of the people against the war didn't believe it. Somebody needs to call her on it. That is an even bigger problem, imho.
