"Why I am representing a "Detainee" at Guantanomo"
Sorry if this has been posted before but I am totally horrified.

This is a from blog at Huffpo by an attorney who is representing a detainee who is dying - and she's doing if for free.

Turns out we dropped leaflets over Afghanistan asking people to turn people in - for money. Holy shit! People probably were turning in their own mothers.

Here's a copy of the leaflet:

1. how discouraging..............
we truly don't give a rip about the people of Afghanistan, Iraq or any other sovereign nation that plays host to our military adventurism.

2. OK, now I KNOW our military is in the hurt locker
We can't find a single damned "rear with the gear" typist who would notice that FORCES is not spelled GORCES before sending that lot off to the printer? And surely the thing had to be vetted up the chain?

I found the stupid thing, with others, at this link with the same error: http://www.psywarrior.com/afghanleaf40.html

It is also mentioned--GORCES intact--in this document, on page 8 (15 in the PDF sequence): http://www.ccr-ny.org/v2/reports/docs/Torture_Report_Final_version.pdf

3. I had no idea we dropped this shit - mispellings and all. With
this kind of incentive to desperately poor people, there is no telling how many people got turned in because of this shit. I am beyond disgusted.

There are people who collect these leaflets from this and previous conflicts. Another big mistake, here, from Vietnam:

http://www.btinternet.com.nyud.net:8090/~rod.oakland/SP2316.jpg In life generally things don’t always go to plan and leaflet production is no exception. In mid-1967 there was a move to transfer leaflet printing from the Army printing office Japan to RSC Manila. Part of the reason for this was that mistakes were being made in Japan. For example there was an earlier version of the leaflet shown on the left that was in a horizontal format with the two frames side by side. The leaflet’s intended message was that 'the Viet Cong don't really care if you get hurt as a consequence of their actions". Inadvertently the Army printer had reversed the frames since, using a photographic negative to make the plate, he had accidently turned the negative backwards. So it ended up with frame # 1 showing a helicopter attacking a house and frame # 2 showing a VC firing at the helicopter. The message, therefore, was that US helicopters attacked houses and that the VC should then fire back at them! The mistake was not spotted until hundreds of thousands of leaflets had been dropped!
