Majoritarianism is not a technique of argument |
|
The fact that 51% of people agree with you is not a testament to the correctness of your position. The fact that 51% of people voted the way that you did is not a validation of the virtue of your position. If you have to argue for your position by resorting to childish, snarky remarks about how the majority agrees with you and disagrees with me, demonstrates the weakness of your argument.
Thank you for hearing this message. I'm going to bed now.

2. Yep, the Majority Here Would Agree I'm Sure. |
|
But I agree with your premise! Especially considering how many people actually vote!
I'm going to bed now too!

The majority of people in the US at one time may have supported slavery...but that never made it the correct position.
I should go to bed, but don't wanna.

4. Majoritarianism is a political philosophy, not a demagogue trick |
|
Majoritarianism just asserts that in a society the majority has the right to decide after a vote, even if the minority disagrees. It has nothing to do with what is "right" or "wrong". It's just a system (which more specific rules can be discussed, since the 51% majority doesn't nned to be normative) that allows a society to make decisions (which can be reversed or amended by another majority).
The alternative is the libertarian balkanisation, which sooner or later leads to a warlord society.
What's described in the OP is a form of demagogery...

5. Unfortunately, the fetishizing of majoritarianism leads to... |
|
...populist demogogury. The "elections have consequences" rhetoric used by the Talibornagains is a good example of what I'm talking about. Many Ancient Greek thinkers though that populist demogogury leads to tyranny, by how this country is falling apart as a result of the Pukes using demogogury on the Religious Right I have come to agree with those Ancient Greeks.
