Had Bush seen the NIE when he claimed "hornets nest" theory was wrong?
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 12:25 AM by BurtWorm
“You know, I’ve heard this theory about, you know, everything was just fine until we arrived <in Iraq>, and that, you know, kind of that uh stir up the hornet’s nest theory. It, it, it just doesn’t hold water as far as I’m concerned.” — President Bush, August 21 (video here).

Today: Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Worsens Terror Threat

A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document.

…An opening section of the report, “Indicators of the Spread of the Global Jihadist Movement,” cites the Iraq war as a reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology.

How’s that theory holding water now, Mr. President?

http://ezraklein.typepad.com/blog/2006/09/reality_kicks_b.html

The above comes from a post ("Reality Kicks Bush's Ass,") by "shakes" at Ezra Klein's blog. What strikes me about the video is that it took place well after the NIE was first circulated--apparently widely--as reported in the NYTimes story linked to above <emphasis below added>:

The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document.

The intelligence estimate, completed in April, is the first formal appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government. Titled “Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States,’’ it asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe.

An opening section of the report, “Indicators of the Spread of the Global Jihadist Movement,” cites the Iraq war as a reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology.

The report “says that the Iraq war has made the overall terrorism problem worse,” said one American intelligence official.

More than a dozen United States government officials and outside experts were interviewed for this article, and all spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a classified intelligence document. The officials included employees of several government agencies, and both supporters and critics of the Bush administration. All of those interviewed had either seen the final version of the document or participated in the creation of earlier drafts. These officials discussed some of the document’s general conclusions but not details, which remain highly classified.

Of course we know very well that Bush is a liar. But, as Bush himself might say, I find it "interesting" that as campaign season geared up and the Rove strategy of demonizing Dems for not being butch enough about Iraq was being unwrapped, Bush probably knew very well that his administration's being "butch on Iraq" was apparently a primary cause of the spread of international terrorism since 9/11.

It just makes me loath him more.

1. Well we know he doesn't read anything above the 3rd grade
level....so he dismissed the NIE appraisel because it was simply too long and too boring....why does he need to be bothered with the facts when his gut rules everything he does....I would put the sarcasm symbol but unfortunately this is true...

2. Evasive weasels denied reading the Iraq NIE
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 12:49 AM by chill_wind
Remember this garbage from his own NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR....
(I cross-posted this to a related thread earlier tonite, but it fits here even better. This is just one snippet, but google probably has a jillion references to the specific Bush/Rice evasions on the NIE, especially all the Rice evasions. This tells us everything we need to know about just how much they knew then they were in deep legal and political shit, even then.

You'll recall....

"
(...)
A senior administration official who briefed reporters yesterday said neither Bush nor national security adviser Condoleezza Rice read the NIE in its entirety. "They did not read footnotes in a 90-page document," said the official, referring to the "Annex" that contained the State Department's dissent. The official conducting the briefing rejected reporters' entreaties to allow his name to be used, arguing that it was his standard procedure for such sessions to be conducted anonymously.

The official said Bush was "briefed" on the NIE's contents, but "I don't think he sat down over a long weekend and read every word of it." Asked whether Bush was aware the State Department called the Africa-uranium claim "highly dubious," the official, who coordinated Bush's State of the Union address, said: "He did not know that."

3. He might have seen a one page cheat sheet on it.
It may have been designed to "deemphasize" confirmation of the hornet's nest theory. :eyes:

6. Rice's story doesn't fly.
She tries to claim she didn't read all of it either, as his NSA.... her implication being therefore he couldn't know what she didn't know....before they dropped the bombs. I find that completely, contemptably laughable.

The ambitious and highly achieving Professor Rice didn't get where she is today by being sloppy, incompetant and negligent. Yet she wants us to believe she was exactly that.

5. Relevant TPM post urges us to call Reps and demand NIE made public
My emphasis added:

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2006_09_24.php#009946
...

For the last six weeks and, in fact, the last six months, the White House and the president have been engaged in a coordinated campaign to convince the public that despite the setbacks and mistakes, the war in Iraq is a critical component of fighting the War on Terror. Making that argument is their plan for the next six weeks until the election. All the while, they've been sitting on a report that says that's flat wrong, a lie and that precisely the opposite is the case.

That's a cover-up in every meaningful sense of the word, a calculated effort to hide information from and deceive the public. And it's actually a replay of what happened in late 2002, when the White House kept the Iraq WMD NIE's doubts about Iraqi weapons programs away from the public.

The president has made very clear he wants the next six weeks to be about Iraq and the War on Terror. By all means, let's do it. But first the president has to come clean about what he's keeping hidden from the public -- the fact that the people he has fighting the War on Terror are telling him that what he's telling the public about Iraq and the War on Terror flat isn't true.

Late word from the White House is that the Times report is "not representative of the complete document." Well, then, by all means, let's get a look at the whole thing so the public can get the big picture and find out who's telling the truth.

So pick up the phone and tell your reps and senators what you think. Then ask them whether they support releasing the April Iraq/Terrorism NIE to the public before the November election. Yes, or no. You may hear excuses that it can't be released because it's classified. But that's plain bull. Reports like this are routinely and without much difficulty released in redacted versions which remove any specific information that might reveal what intel types call 'sources and methods'....

8. They saw it. They dismissed it. Now they lie about ever seeing it.
It did not fit into their neocon fantasy land worldview. It was therefore not of interest or merit.
