Holy Crap! Anyone watching the Generals on CSPAN3??
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 02:00 PM by sparosnare
Rep. Walter Jones (R - NC) - speaking with Gen. Batiste. He stated that this war was based on false information and he's distressed about sending our children to fight a war for the wrong reasons. Gen. Batiste told him to read Suskind's book "The One-Percent Doctrine" - he has just finished it and said everyone should read it, then maybe they'll start asking questions. :wow:

13. He's the one who led the anti-French silliness and coined
"freedom fries."
He had an epiphany-rare for a puklicon-and re-examined his stance. The result is that he has repudiated his earlier adolescent, though typically publicon, behavior.

83. That Republican from NC also praised Wes Clark during
the follow-up meeting in the House Armed Services Committee when they called both Clark and Richard Perle back up to address what they'd talked about in September 2003.

Jones flatly stated that one of these men had been correct in 2003 and one of them had been far, far wrong and that the person who had accurately predicted the outcome of Iraq was Wes.

Jones, father of the terminology, "Freedom Fries," has denounced that phrase and the war after hearing from many, many soldier consitituents. Jones is one of the few Republicans in Congress to have actually served in the military and respects what he's told from the rank and file over the Bush spin.

There is a duty to disobey an unlawful order, but, that's thin ice, militarily speaking. That is why it was important to have the legal memos saying what we wanted to do to detainees wasn't torture.

There are many generals who are good guys but Schoomaker is not one of them. He is Rummy's butt boy.

18. This is so damning
I hope Rummy's head rolls. They've refuted everything he's ever said and said he did not only not have a plan for occupation, but threatened to fire anybody who brought the subject up. He lies about troop recommendations and requests for equipment. Holy crap is right.

We caused the insurgency and with every death and every person detained and tortured. Durbin got his ass handed to him for asking how we can force these ungrateful Iraqis to stand up because they have the best military in the world helping them -- without charge!

The general said these people come to work every day through a death zone and have to patrol in pick-up trucks, not humvees. Their families are endangered by them doing what they do. He said the Iraqis lack neither the courage nor the will to fight, they are treated more expendably than our troops which is pretty bad.

The Abu Ghraib stuff was pretty bad too, even knowing what I know.

We're there for ten years at least.

of Gen. Batiste wailing on Rumsfeld and the "mismanagement" of the war.

Afterwards they interviewed Jalal Talabani, the Iraqi president who, not surprisingly, rejected the General's assertions.

How does the request get lost up the chain of command and what happens to the General who requests? (Shumer's question)

Bastiste saying they were consistently asking for more supplies and more troops and were told they were limited. At that time, they were not thinking about a counter insurgency - limitations were given but he brought what he needed as good commanders do. Much worse now.

64. Michael Ware, CNN’s Baghdad correspondent said today
that the Pentagon leaking the NIE report from April NOW was significant... and showed that the Generals are openly turning against the civilian leadership (B*sh) of the war...

It was an interesting interview. It sounds like they are interested in the outcome of the next election, since Dems are the only reality-based party on Iraq, but are out of power (for now).

This is pretty brutal. There's going to be some serious damage control by the administration on this.

The one general said that they are 60,000 troops short and that we need to get more troops. He said that that may be difficult and expensive. But if we don't get them, we will fail in Iraq that we and our children will have to pay for this mistake.

Why do these generals hate America?

Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 02:43 PM by Marie26
Batiste - Civil war of some magnitude, which will turn into a regional mess. Separate Kurdistan, clashing w/Turkey. This is going to drag us into a mess of some proportion. Sadly, we went into this w/o doing our homework.

Eaton - Sadly, biggest beneficiary is Iran. Hegemony.. resurgent Islamic republic of Iran.

Hammes - Civil war in Iraq. It will spread - it already has. Major oil disruptions, new terrorist strongholds w/easy access & re-create Afganistan for the terrorists.

This is frightening!

Harry Reid - This hearing could change our country.

Dorgan - This is the most stunning testimony I've ever heard... You fight for your country by speaking out at this Senate hearing.

Frankly, I'd like to see W kissing asses on national TV at the UN security council.

The other option, favored by the officers I heard is to take an area, hold it and rebuild the infrastructure. That is where they are so short handed.

They described the current tactics as whack-a-mole. Said we don't have the troops to do it right.

will turn into regional mess. Kurds have a goal of freedom; Turkish government have been fighting in the south; they're not about to let part of their country cede to Kurdistan. Impact of Iran and the Shia/Sunni divide will flash and involve countries who are now our friends, we'll be dragged into a mess.

122. Amazing hearing. The brutal honesty really underscores
the fix the Bush Administration has misled us into, and some of the tough choices we face as a result.

125. Have ANY called for Troop Withdrawal?
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 02:57 PM by leftchick
I saw all of their opening statements and became discouraged when none of them would talk of withdrawing troops. Like good soldiers all are hoping for a way for the mission to succeed.

136. I'm trying to be patient with that -
not put the cart before the horse, so to speak. What happened today was incredibly significant, even if they didn't call for troop withdrawal. This testimony brings to light the mismanagement, lack of planning, and just downright incompetency of the leadership in the Pentagon. It's the first step in getting people to realize Iraq is a failed policy. Then we go from there....

143. Q by Clinton : what happens when a timetable is set for withdrawal
Edited on Mon Sep-25-06 02:55 PM by BelgianMadCow
answer was basically : civil war and a subsequent regional conflict, so basically implying we cannot pull out.

Personally, I find that the US shouldn't have been there in the first place, and is certainly fueling violence and terrorism by being there.

A forced withdrawal of the US, as soon as a US paid for UN relief operation can be on the ground.
Scott Ritter can head that one. :sarcasm:

175. I agree
it seems to be that "winning" the war in Iraq is the main focus. It is admirable that the retired generals are concerned abuot the troops and their equiptment, but they are retired and have no power to make it better and they will not make it better, imo, by these appearances. We all know that the invasion of Iraq was manipulated by Bush and his lies. Seems the generals do mot want to address that. Excuse me, but should we not mention the lies Bush told to his cuntry in order to occupy and invade Iraq? I failed to see the generals talking about that order to invade, that was absolutely a criminal act.

So, I shut it off, losing my patience with the lot of them and their committment, apparently, to winning a war that is at it's worst, nothing more than a slaugherhouse

127. Wow! Just WOW!!
The open and direct testimony of these real patriots is a grim indicator of the enormous trouble this couuntry is in.

The clownish incompetence and overweening arrogance of the bush administration is beyond comprehension.

Something has to be done-now!

No one there from Afghanistan. Karzai: Good for me! (WTF?)

Question: Army stretched too thin...

Rummy: Any time there's a war.....there may be units asked to increase the number of days....bring in other troops earlier. Not gonna discuss a specific unit...

Doesn't answer the f-in' question.

162. Secretly furious and feeling kinda randy.
I have a friend going back to Iraq soon for his third tour. Last time I talked to him, he told me how pissed off everyone is. No one believes (how could they) we went into Iraq because of terrorism. Not anyone from his battalion commander to the troops he's leads. When I met him, he was a hardcore Republican. Today he hates the Republican Party and won't even admit to ever having been a part of the GOP.

He's stationed at Ft. Hood and is a career Army NCO.
