UH Roe v Wade still has a 5-4 MAJORITY with Scalito on court |
|
Ain't even close to being overturned. Kennedy has affirmed it as settled law several times.

"he would look closely at the legislative history of federal laws and would be careful not to strip states of powers they traditionally have held -- such as regulating the practice of medicine" Then he sides with the other RW Justices: Scalia and Thomas concerning the Oregon death with dignity case. The guy says one thing then does the other. Flip-flopper? Full article: http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/1123667975170530.xml&coll=7

They were talking about how Alito will be a strict constructionist and help overturn Roe--they said it out loud.
But with almost 70% of the people in favor of keeping Roe, I don't think it will happen--or if it does, it won't stick and we'll end up with a law that upholds Choice even more definitively.

It's worth too much in political capital whenever they need to whip their fundy base up into a frenzy. It's just too valuable a boogeyman to them.

7. They Would Overturn Roe V. Wade In a Texas Minute! |
|
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 10:13 PM by AndyTiedye
It would be the best thing that happened to the Repubs in years. All the scandals swept away by the campaign to make abortion illegal in every state, and then there would be the push for the U.S. Constitutional amendment to ban it everywhere.
It would be the gift that keeps on giving to the Repubs for the next 10 years.
Of course, there would be Dems who would say it doesn't matter if abortion becomes illegal throughout the South, the women can always fly to California or New York, or Canada if it becomes illegal everywhere in the country. (Of course they can, if they have money, that's why it's safe for the Repubs to do this).

8. I just have to disagree with you. |

Abortion and gays are the only trump cards they pull out every election year to galvanize their nutbag base of fundy voters. And gay issues are slipping as homosexuality becomes more mainstream.
Abortion is "ol' reliable" for these people. If they overturn Roe, they'll basically sign their death warrant politically. Anti-abortion folks are NOT the majority, they're just louder.

the Great Depression. It may help them in states where they are already very strong, but everywhere else, including here in Wisconsin, they would be decimated arguing their extremist position.

11. I agreed with your assessment of the Republicans for a long |

time. But I have lately come to realize that the people in charge of the Republican party are not really Republicans, and don't really care what happens to them in the future.
I just wish the Republican party would come to the same conclusion.

This is the one issue that created christian fundamentalist activism. Without it they will fall apart I believe. Meanwhile the lefts pet cause, civil rights, is under attack which could easily whip the left into a frenzy.

23. You Think If the Fundies Win on Abortion, They'll Just Go Away??? |
|
Suppose the Fundies win completely on abortion, and get it banned everywhere. Suppose they get their Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage too. Some seem willing to let that happen, thinking it would mean that the Fundies couldn't hurt us anymore.
Then the Fundies would be back to get Lawrence v. Texas overturned so they could start locking gays up again. They'd be back to get Griswold overturned so they can ban birth control again.
You can't stop them by giving in to them.

They just want the corporate/unitary executive decisions to be made the 'right' way. They will hem and haw........
We all know that if Roe v Wade gets overturned they will be out of power for at least a decade.

than overturning Roe v Wade. I am not for it but this guy is so crazy and over the edge the least of my worries is whether or not he will overturn this ruling. We should be worrying about him giving supreme power to this illegitimate government. Just my opinion.

not unlikely that another will need to be replaced before 2008. Additionally, abortion isn't the only issue of concern.

20. Kennedy is no friend of Roe v. Wade. He's not for overruling it, but he's |

Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 01:49 AM by Czolgosz
in favor of allowing a state impose just about any restriction it wants on the right of reproductive freedom as long as there is some protection for a threat-to-the-woman's-health exception during the first 22 weeks of her pregnancy. We have every reason to believe that Roberts will be at best comparable to Kennedy on the reproductive freedom (more likely to the right) and Alito is clearly far to the right of Kennedy (and perhaps to the right of Scalia and Thomas, too).
Will they outright overrule Roe? No.
The Supreme Court with Alito would likely allow Kansas -- if Kansas wanted to pass such a law -- to (1) ban all abortions after 22 weeks into the pregnancy notwithstanding risks to the woman's health, (2) require that all abortions must be preformed at a hospital and not a clinic (and, by the way, very few hospitals perform abortions), (3) require notification to, and consent from, a woman's doctor, husband, and father of the fetus (plus both parents for all minors) as long as there was a health-threat-to-the-mother exception, (4) impose special fees, (5) require attendance at pre-abortion classes with a lot of misleading and religious-tainted bullshit about supposed health risks from abortions, (6) impose a two week "cooling off" period, (7) require registration as an abortion recipient, etc.
Those people who say "Don't worry, Roe v. Wade is safe" have not read the relevant judicial decisions.
With Alito, in time there will be "reproductive rights states" and "Jesus-loves-them-fetuses states" -- count on it.

those same freaks helped put chimp in the WH. Those same freaks chimp owes. All the repukes know it. If Roe V Wade doesn't happen, they'll turn on chimp in a texas minute.
These people will do ANYTHING to overturn Roe V Wade and outlaw abortion in every state of the union. They don't care about the majority, they don't care about state's rights or anything else. They care about gawd and controlling women's reproductive rights.
Don't fool yourself. Those are the ones to watch out for. For as much as they claim the moral high ground, they have none when it comes to shoving gawd and the fucking bible down everyone's throats.
