The Dems Got No Fight They Say? Bullshit! Go Pelosi Go!
I saw this press release earlier at work that Nancy sent to hastert saying they'll procedurally refuse House adjournment next week if certain demands aren't met. As soon as I was done reading it, though in the quiet of work, I clapped my hands and let out an audible "YES!". I then immediately proceeded to print it out in its entirety and put it right up front and center on my Wall O'Politics. I was a bit disappointed to see this hasn't been discussed here much yet, so here it is for all of your perusal.

Read it. It'll make you proud. It certainly made me proud. I can't wait to see what comes next!

The following is the official press release from Nancy's office:

-------------------------------------------------------------
Democratic Leadership Urges Congress to Act on Five Key Issues Before Adjourning

September 25, 2006

The Honorable J. Dennis Hastert

Speaker

United States House of Representatives

H-232, The Capitol

Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Speaker Hastert:

More than three weeks ago, we wrote to you requesting action on key issues facing the American people. Though we have yet to receive a response from you, the urgency to act remains: from national security to economic security, from the cost of health care and college tuition to the price at the pump, our country is heading in the wrong direction.

Based on the concerns of all Americans, Congress must act on five key issues that have an immediate impact on the lives of the American people before adjourning for the November election. As Majority Leader Boehner continues to say that Congress will adjourn by Friday, September 29th, this leaves less than one week in which to act. We reject assertions that the people’s business can wait until after the November election, and therefore, unless you address the following issues, Democrats will actively resist adjournment.

Five years after 9/11, our nation is not as safe as it should be. We must do a better job at protecting Americans at home and abroad. Glaring deficiencies exist in our homeland security – as evident in the federal government’s response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, and the failure to secure our ports and airports. The urgent recommendations of the independent and bipartisan 9/11 Commission have not been passed or fully implemented. Our first responsibility is to keep the American people safe. Before we recess, Congress must pass legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations.

As several reports continue to make clear, wages have not kept pace with rising costs, resulting in a decline in real wages that worsens the middle-class squeeze. Lower-income workers are suffering even more because Congress has failed to raise the minimum wage for nine years. Before Congress adjourns, we must have a straight up or down vote on increasing the minimum wage, free from the usual Republican efforts to attach tax cuts for the wealthiest few that doom these bills. Democrats will not support a Congressional pay raise until we give 7 million American workers a raise by either passing H.R. 2429, Congressman George Miller’s Fair Minimum Wage Act, or the Hoyer Amendment to the Labor-HHS appropriations bill that increases the minimum wage.

Hundreds of thousands of seniors and the disabled are falling into the "Donut Hole" of the flawed Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit, which requires them to continue to pay premiums while receiving no benefits. Before Congress recesses, we must give the Secretary of Health and Human Services the authority to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices for seniors and people with disabilities.

Students returning to college continue to confront skyrocketing tuition costs, and yet the Republican Congress recently cut $12 billion in student aid. Before Congress recesses, we must restore the massive cuts in college tuition assistance imposed by the Congress and expand the size and availability of Pell Grants by passing an improved Labor-HHS appropriations bill.

This year, Americans have been paying soaring gas prices, increasing the bottom line for oil companies that already enjoy historic profits. Taxpayers should not be forced to give tax breaks to Big Oil companies. Democrats insist on an energy agenda that works for all Americans, not just the oil industry. We can begin by rolling back tax breaks for Big Oil and investing the savings in alternative fuels to achieve energy independence.

Congress has less than a week to act on these critical issues before you intend to recess. Democrats stand ready to work with you at any time to address these urgent national needs; anything less would be a serious abdication of our responsibilities as elected officials. Therefore, until Congress passes legislation that meets the real needs of the American people, House Democrats will actively resist adjournment.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelosi Steny Hoyer

House Democratic Leader House Democratic Whip

James E. Clyburn John B. Larson

31. Don't need to add it...
The Torture enabling bills have to be debated and passed in both Houses. There will be lots of opportunity to fight those. The MSM is already forcing the pukes to defend the indefensible.

Pelosi's letter lays out obvious and concrete legislation that would make our country stronger, embarrass the pukes and set clear lines between the parties before the elections.

Can the Democrats actually force Congress to remain in session?

This should be pinned to the front page.

14. Yes I believe they can
It takes a quorum to pass a motion to adjourn. If the Democrats keep them from obtaining a quorum no business including adjournment can be accomplished..When the Democrats in Texas tried that Tom Delay involved the Federal Government in the hunt to bring the Democrats back to vote. I don't know what the Majority can do about it..

I was expecting this to be posted front and center the second it was made public.

This is an incredible letter from her to hastert. It is framed perfectly and is an incredibly strong message to send. It's also enticing to think about what her next steps are going to be. To me, this letter totally made my day!

19. In My Opinion,
Every DU'er should be sending this out to all of their contacts via email. This a tremendously written press release in my opinion and has everything in it that it should. The message is framed perfectly in my opinion and it readily displays that we have many ideas. I would encourage as many DU'ers as possible to send this around. Less than a month and a half to go!

That's totally and completely ball-less. Big, fucking deal! They "will not support" it but will swooningly collect the pay and spend it ... possibly the most lily-livered 'stance' possible. Sheesh! That's like Mom saying "no dessert for you until you eat your Chicken McNuggets!" What bullshit.

29. What kind of fight,
there can be none. It was a well composed letter and addresses important things that effect almost every American but with the Dictator type of government we have in this country there is little if anything that will come of it.
Even the opposition can see what little our apologists in Congress really do for us. Once again it is time for our elected representatives to visit their money. Check them out, it's easy to see just who supports them. Then make up your own mind, what do those big money people do for you.

32. This is win, win, win, stuff for the Dems.
Shows the Dems have a plan and agenda.

Shows the repugs run a "do nothing" Congress.

Shows the repugs don't care about National security, just their pet nonsensical distractions.

Makes the repugs have to fight to even end the session after having achieve nothing.

If they extend the session they still lose, because it shows even with a majority they can't drive the agenda, or even get any useful work done.

An extended congress helps Dems and hurt Repugs campaigning because the repugs need more time to go home and do damage control after their failed session.

Pelosi rocks!

The economy is good, but not for many seniors, college students, wge earners, and the working poor.

Sounds like the Democrats are remembering Clinton's line:

It's the economy, stupid...with the emphasis on those with average or below average incomes.

35. Political process for adjournment
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Congress

"The Constitution forbids either house from meeting any place outside the Capitol, or from adjourning for more than three days, without the consent of the other house. The provision was intended to prevent one house from thwarting legislative business simply by refusing to meet. To avoid obtaining consent during long recesses, the House or Senate may sometimes hold pro forma meetings, sometimes only minutes long, every three days. The consent of both bodies is required for Congress's final adjournment, or adjournment sine die, at the end of each congressional session. If the two houses cannot agree on a date, the Constitution permits the President to settle the dispute."

I wonder if it just requires a simple majority to set the date for adjournment? Because it could set the stage for a fillibuster requiring the imp to intervine to "settle the dispute". Its a pretty interesting tactic for insuring the "message" gets out.
