4. Doubt it will last
The Martin minority government lasted 19 months.

Prediction: Harper's gone before Bush.

9. I'll Believe A Fillibuster When I See It...
And the repubs are just going to blow it up. It would be a start, but we're still in the minority. Until it changes, I'm very very very concerned as to the future of this country, and now this continent.

11. It's not fatal
A conservative minority is about the best we could have hoped, actually. The Liberals have been in power for 12 years, and like it or not, they have been scandal-plagued.

The good news is that the CPC won't be able to do much in Parliament; there's zero chance the NDP and Grits will play ball w/ them, and The Bloc care only about The Bloc. I see this lasting maybe 12 months; less if Harper starts thinking about doing something crazy.

I want the NDP to get at least 20 seats tonight; that would be great to see.

18. I wonder how much those "scandals" have been nurtured by Reed & Rove
"Scandals" are always in the eye of the beholder, and can be pumped up to be a lot more than they really are.. Whitewater and mopst of the Clinton "scandals" illustrate that. If you ask a non-political person about the Clinton admin, they will probably say "scandal", but if you delve further, Monica is the only real issue that he was tagged with. All the rest was just nonsense..

I don;t know all that much about Canada, but I wonder if the scandals there are inflated for effect like ours are.

23. Not really
Canada isn't the US, and I'm saying this as a US Expat that's been here for 5 years.

We could get into a big convo about how much of the sponsorship scandal has hurt Paul Martin (enough, in my mind), but never underestimate the fatigue factor as well. Canadians just wanted a change, rightly or wrongly; the great thing about Parliament is that a no-confidence vote can come anytime, and we have a new election.

I'm not too worried about what's happening tonight. Concerned, yes; Martin needs to step aside for some new blood; but this isn't the end of the world by any stretch..

I'm a Georgian who only is able to watch CBN once a week at most on CSPAN.

27. Parliament can call a no-confidence vote at any time
And there would be a new election, so w/ the CPC getting just a minority government (if it holds tonight) it can happen pretty easily.

31. So, that is good news? I'm sorry I'm such a stupid American.
We've been trying to keep up w/ the UK, Australia & Canada. Bush is somewaht of a distraction here in the USA. :(

How can we can we help Canada? Let us know.

Peace.

32. It's good news
I'm a US Expat living here (5 years), so I'm still learning, too:)

Honestly, this is about the best to be expected, and that's pretty good. The conservatives can't ramrod anything through Parliament, and the NDP and Liberals can essentially have a opposition coalition to block any crazy bills the CPC want to pass..

10. The responses here
are ridiculous. Canada is NOT the US. A Conservative minority gov is not going to transform it to jr. bush world. I wish you'd all just stop hyperventilating. Canada will remain a liberal country.

Cons were screaming their hatred for *, and commentators said that is what ALL Canadian pols have to do to win. Maybe some Canadian DUers can verify.

13. yep
This won't change much, if anything in Parliament; the CPC will be on their own, and nobody else will play ball w/ them. If they had won a Majority, then it would have been different..

It will be an interesting ride.... don't let Canada go the way of the fascism that's happening here.

First they take over broadcast media.. rupert murdock/news.corp has his sites set for expanding his media empire even more than it is now, in order to bolster his neo conservative agenda.

They preach hate 24-7, and always remember that the old Saudi King vowed a jihad against the west, not just the US.

30. Sam Brulte loses, Michael Ignatieff wins
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 11:15 PM by jim3775
Kind of a good news/bad news situation.

Brulte was in the pocket of the American movie/music industry and is a proponent of ridiculously tough laws against file sharing there was a mojor internet campaign to defeat her.

Ignatieff is a neocon agenda supporting-Zell Millerish-harvard boys club intellectual.

Those are the two Liberals I most wanted to see defeated.
