Just Heard: Chip Reid on Imus "the chances of a filibuster now are zero" |
|
"they are planning a big caucus in a few days to announce moves against this administration" ... or some such nonsense.
Surprise, surprise.

since his vote for Roberts.
I really think he WANTS to filibuster, but needs more pressure.

within the Dem party and WHO EXACTLY is telling them that filibuster would be a bad thing to do.
My guess would be Bill Clinton and James Carville.

9. The Gallup Poll That Just Came Out Was Probably Decisive... |
|
Big media and the republican noise machine have successfully bamboozled the public into thinking that Alito will not overturn Roe and that he's a mainstream conservative, just like they bamboozled the public into thinking that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11 and that there were WMDs in Iraq...all lies..
They create their own reality and the dems bear some responsibility for their "hat tricks" during the hearings and blathering on about nothing...

13. Evidently they do not have the 41 votes needed for a filibuster. |
|
Ben Nelson is out. Jeffords is not likely to vote for a filibuster; he voted to confirm Roberts. Then we have the other Democratic senators from "red states"--Landrieu, Pryor, Lincoln, etc., who are unlikely to vote for a filibuster.
I think more are willing to vote against him on the floor, and perhaps some Republicans--but the Republicans will prevail as they have the votes, and if it is close, there will be Democrats willing to cross over and vote with the Republicans--as has happened in the past, i.e, the "bankruptcy reform" bill.
Sad to say, am afraid our only realistic hope is to keep Alito's numbers below sixty.

17. WTF? I have been getting very excited about the increasing |
|
chances for a filibuster - and even the press has been jumping on board - but the "Gang of 14" has not met - and they have enough "No" votes - but the dems have already moved on to the next fight and I am pissed.
Maybe this post will get someone up off their butt to call their Senator again. Personally, I have sent over a dozen faxes and I call every day.
What is YOUR deal?

23. Why would they filibuster if they do not have 41 votes against cloture? |
|
Evidently, they do not have enough Democrats who will vote against cloture, although all 8 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee will vote NO today on referring Alito to the floor for an "up or down" vote.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jeffords did support a filibuster. He has nothing to lose. He's strongly opposed to the administration, and though he voted for Roberts, don't forget that he's pro-choice and had the foresight to vote against the war. Having said all that, I agree that a filibuster is unlikely, taking into account, the support for Alito on the part of the American people.

It is very sad that the American people have been fooled again into supporting a justice who will, far more likely than not, to vote against their bests interests.

leading the filibuster. Or Harry Reid, as minority leader. Kerry said he'll support a filibuster if any of them launch one.

26. Frist may be worried that the "up or down vote" for Alito will be anemic- |

though he is likely to be confirmed. Any thoughts on whether Snowe, Collins or Chaffe will be willing to vote NO on the floor vote, even though they are not likely to support a filibuster.

but my chances of remaining a democrat and just giving my money to all divisions of their fund raising apparatus will also be zero if that (no real fight) happens. A vote "no" with no backup threat is useless in this one party state. I will only choose individual candidates from that time forth to support (most likely dems) while registered as unaffiliated.
