Horowitz fired that UCLA alum paying students to tape "left-leaning" profs
Conservative Alumnus Pulls Offer to Buy Lecture Tapes
By CINDY CHANG
Published: January 24, 2006

Monica Almeida/The New York Times
Andrew Jones offered to pay U.C.L.A. students to tape lectures by left-leaning professors.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 23 - A 24-year-old conservative alumnus who announced earlier this month that he planned to pay students at the University of California, Los Angeles, to tape-record the lectures of left-leaning professors backed down after U.C.L.A. officials informed him on Monday that he would be violating school policy.

The alumnus, Andrew Jones, said he abandoned the plan to save his student supporters from possible legal action by the university, even though he believed they would be engaged in a "newsgathering" effort protected by the First Amendment.

Mr. Jones says he is confident that students will volunteer to tape lectures or take detailed notes in an effort to expose their professors as liberal partisans who do not tolerate dissent in their classrooms....(A) U.C.L.A. official said Monday that even without the monetary incentive, students who passed tapes of lectures to Mr. Jones would be in danger of sanctions by the university and possibly the professors who were recorded without permission....

***

Mr. Jones worked briefly during and after college for the conservative activist David Horowitz, who has been lobbying state legislatures to pass an "Academic Bill of Rights" to protect students with minority viewpoints from partisan professors.

Mr. Horowitz says he fired Mr. Jones, accusing him of pressing U.C.L.A. students to file false reports that they had been physically attacked by leftist activists.

3. Damn, how creepy is this guy!
He's almost a dead ringer for Lee Harvey Oswald.

Sounds like this guy didn't like having his precious conservative world view chanllenged, and got pissed when it was. Now he's just trying to insure that future conservative kids can skate through UCLA without having to expend any brain cells defending their vacous positions. Sad, pathetic little man he is.

12. Good question!
He looks like another Ralph Reed, Jack Abramoff, Adam Kidan, Karl Rove in the making. Those young Republicans, they can't seem to tell the truth. Parents should warn their kids before the go off to college about people like this.

9. UCLA should revoke this little turds degree
I don't know if they can do that, but obviously he didn't learn anything while attending school at UCLA.

Anyone who has ever sat in on a college History, Poly Sci or Philosophy class knows that it take a mix of liberal and conservative people to make the class interesting and usually the profs are liberal.

Wouldn't that make a con wonder? if a majority the people who study politics are liberal, that maybe the rights policies are a little warped?

15. Is the creepy pallid undertaker/evangelical preacher look required to be
the next Ralph Reed? Why will this guy not encourage students to engage in an intellectual debate in the classes? Because he's a fucking facist in training. Gah! Reed went to UGA when I was there and he was an even bigger asshat than this Andrew Jones.

Get yourself to Bob Jones or Liberty University and leave UCLA alone, Mr. Jones. :(

16. More On Academic Witch Hunt At UCLA
The story of the the UCLA based, Bruin Alumuni Association's quest to expose radical instructors by paying students to spy in classrooms has been recieving a fair amount of media coverage this week. Last night John Kasich interviewed Andrew Jones, founder of this organization that has targeted many instructors at UCLA, followed by an interview with an instructor targeted by Jones.

After Jones did a brief rap about how these instructors are "indoctrinating" the students in their classrooms, Kasich asked him how many Conservative instructors had been exposed so far. Jones seemed a bit shaken answering that there were none but if he had seen any indoctrinating, he would have put them on his list. Jones tried to cover himself explaining that at UCLA the majority of instructors are Liberal. When Kasich referred to the people on his radical list as Democrats, Jones objected with, "I wouldn't even call them Democrats." He described his victims as Dean followers who want to eliminate capitalism and " normal modes of life."

Jonathan Zasloff, UCLA Instructor on Jones' list, appeared in the next segment. Looking far less extreme than Jones, he seemed annoyed and perplexed by the situation. Zasloff explained that if a student feels that he is being indoctrinated or has any complaint he can go to the administration and complain. He noted that Jones conveniently leaves out information in his incriminating reports like failing to mention the Conservative authors on the assigned text list.

comment: Andrew Jones seemed like an oddly obsessed zealot. When he made that weird comment about eliminating capitalism and normal modes of life, I was sure that this guy was not normal. Jonathan Zasloff seemed very mainstream and balanced in comparison to Jones. You have to wonder about the donors giving Jones this money to pay the students to spy. Either they never met him or they're just as strange.

18. every time the bright light is shown on one of these people
the light never fails to show what pitiful little wretches exist on the hard right. This program of "his" cannot survive exposure because its purpose is to be whispered about achieve intimidation through rumor.
I knew a fair share of Young Republican types the first time I went to college. Of the ones you knew...were any of them normal or were they just like Andrew Jones; embryoes of 51 year old men?

20. Jones has B.A. in Poly Sci, PHD req'd to do ANYTHING, except pontificate
He attended years at college, and to what end? Get a job as a what? He was fired for being useless from his only two jobs. Once by David Horowitz, RW gas bag.
This type of talenless, son of two professors who have disavowed Jones' project, has no future except as a media commentator to the new Fourth Reich. And a passport will not be required.

It would seem that anyone who quotes these people as anything but nutjobs don't belong on a progressive board.
