16. someones buying time for something
I was thinking the dems would want one because Leahy thought his remarks were going to be AFTER a 10 min debate on the border fence - he was pissed about that. It looks like they changed the order a bit so maybe they are just buying some time to get shit together...but it was McCain if Im not mistaken that called for the quorum

can suggest otherwise and require a quorum call. it's a stalling tactic.

35. There must be a quorum to the Senate to conduct business
It is always in order to ask for a confirmation that a quorum exists, therefore when you need a few minutes you can ask for it.

32. They really dont
They are doing what they can to protect their asses from war crimes prosecution. It won't matter though once Dems have subpeona power next session.

Plus, the rationale is all wrong. One could say "Saddam Hussein, as the executive, defined Article 3 as he saw fit". Did that make Bush say, "oh, he's not a dictator then, he's not a war criminal"? No, of course not. If the international community view this president for the war criminal that he is, it will not matter what our federal law says. What matters is how the international community interprets Article 3.

They have given Putnam - FL one hour to discuss the rules about debate on the Warrantless Wiretapping bill. Once the rules are agreed to, they will debate it for 90 minutes before a vote.

39. Standing witness
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 04:52 PM by bain_sidhe
**edit: supid typo. My fingers cannot see through my tears.**

I have work to do... but I feel it necessary to stand witness - mute, gagged witness, but witness nonetheless, to the destruction of everything America is.

It's not just legitimizing torture, it's not just gutting habeas corpus. This vote essentially gives one man the right to disappear and torture anyone he wishes to, and provides no check or review by the people or the courts of that power. That, in my opinion amounts to the destruction of America.

Therefore Bush's rallying cry of the last five years has come to pass. The terrorists have won. They have destroyed America.

I stand witness.

Someone is finally telling the truth. He sounds so sad & resigned. "I weep for our country and American values, and the principles on which I was raised." "We're giving a blank check to a gov. whose incompetence was displayed in Hurricane Katrina, who releases conf. info about our soldiers, who puts Congressman on a terror watchlist that he can't get off, who refuses to admit any mistakes, or make any corrections, where everyone from Donald Rumsfeld to Mike Brown is doing a heck of a job."

74. McCain is such a whore--and a lousy actor too!
I hope he isn't expecting an Oscar for that "compromise" performance last week. I never did have much respect for him, but now I have NONE whatsoever.

Wish congress could serve as a check to president.
Indeed, the 3 branches, the checks and balances are voted away today. Giving a blank check to an incompetant government.

seems the only clarity this president wants is a clear green light to do whatever he wants

edit to add: Leahy's words, not mine.
