I just don't understand
I thought I understood politics but I just don't. So the chimps approval is at an all time low. Republican leaders are mired in scandal. The Presidents top adviser may soon be indicted. The VPs former company knowingly contaminates our troops. The population supports Roe v. Wade. Republicans are scared about the midterms and losing seats.

Any sane political analyst would think Dems would have enough power at this time to block a radical RW judge appointment to the Supreme Court. Things couldn't be much worse for the Republicans unless Dems had subpoena power. So, why aren't the Dems fighting back. Why aren't some Republican Senators joining the Dems in opposition? I'm generally not a tin foil hat person but I think this maladministration must have some power over the Senators that is more than what most Americans understand. It's more than the Anthrax, media manipulation, controlling the government.

2. Perhaps You Should Watch the Judiciary Committee Hearing
EVERY DEMOCRAT ON THE COMMITTEE IS STRONGLY OPPOSING THE NOMINATION!

20. Yes, but why not filibuster and why are NO Repubs opposing
What about Chaffee, Spectre, Snowe, etc. They say they are pro-choice but cave at the first opportunity. Why? What power do the christian fascists have on these folks. Why does the business lobby support this? Most are not for the christian fascists and yet they walk in lock step with them. I really don't get it.

3. If Bush didn't get any media coverage he would be packing his bags
you have to look at the way the media acts the propaganda channel. Republicans are confident that their 'nazi propaganda machine' is working.

4. Bottom line, we need the numbers. The power the RNC and the WH have
over the GOP senators is that their jobs are threatened if they don't fall in line.

6. I'm with you...
I ask myself on a daily basis what is it that the Republicans have on the Democrats. I sometimes think they must have pictures of them with goats or children or something. Or they have all had middle of the night visits from men in black threatening the lives of their loved ones. I know how crazy I sound, but Geez!!!!

11. I don't think you are too far from the truth
Those are the answers I turn too when their whipped-dog attitude starts to boggle me.

There are some (on both sides) that seem immune, but how is it so many just seem lack-luster in the face of the RNC assault on the American way of life.

Maybe they will respond to our call of a SOTU walkout and show some real balls for once.

8. I don't get it either.
Either you're right and the wiretapping was all about gathering blackmailable info on congressmen, or the world looks very, very different to the Dems inside the fishbowl than it does to us.

9. Because ideology is not a disqualifier
His judicial philosophy, yes. But all they are really looking at is whether he is qualified. His political ideology does not in and of itself disqualify him.

13. I agree, its boggling
The confirmation has everything to do with all of the aspects of personality. If it were a matter of just qualified then we would not need confirmation.

It seems to me that the matter of qualified/not qualified would be determined during the application and interview process. The hearings should be all about his treatment of the law, judicial ethics and political motivations, and in all of these he fails, miserably. Alito only qualifies for the SCOTUS in that he is a judge (and as we have seen in the past year, that apparently isn't a necessity for nomination).

I hope they put this guy, and every one here after, to pasture until we have a real president that was actually elected to office to make appointments.

18. Idealogy has mattered in the past
Besides, his judicial philosophy is appalling. He gives too much power to the corporations and the executive branch.

12. BushInc controls the media - the strongest Dem opposition gets muted
by design. As if it never happened. The rest gets spun into weaker presentations than they were spoken at the time.

19. Because they are scared shitless of the secret government that is behind
things like the 9/11 "attack," the anthrax attac, and Welstone's murder.

How simple can it be?
