you have to tune in... The working mothers opinion really caused him to go off. I've never seen Larry so combative, but deservedly so in her case.

1. In honor of Dr Laura....
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1 . The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21 . In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

It's just wonderful and expresses my thoughts exactly.

Dr. Laura used to get me SO FURIOUS I thought my blood pressure would make my BRAIN EXPLODE! I wasn't sure that I would like Larry's interviewing style with her as a guest last week, but I watched -- and he gave it to her good on that show! I'm glad I saw it!

When Larry King and I worked together in radio in Florida, he was a flat-out, Jewish liberal, and so was I. We had had one date in the 1950s when he was a young broadcaster, and I was a minor celebrity in Dade County, Florida, doing a daily children's show on TV.

Years later, I was divorced from another man in March 1971 and left with two kids, the dog, and a house with a $200 a month mortgage. I used to listen to Larry when I couldn't sleep or was working on Miami Beach and had to cross the North Bay Causeway where the radio station was located -- to get back to my home in North Miami. One night, I brought food to Larry at WIOD -- it might have been donuts or Malomars. I just kind of hung around because he was funny and bright, and he had excellent radio skills, did funny voices and "schticks" as well as great guests.

I became his unpaid screener -- the person who answers the telephone calls and keeps people comfortable until they go on the air. Eventually, when Larry was so tired at the end of this shift that he was falling asleep at the microphone, I hit on the idea of doing visits to Miami area malls with a cassette recorder, asking people I met about various current issues. I'd present him with a one-hour tape, and the engineer would play them periodically during the early AM hours so Larry could go home and get some sleep -- and I could, too.

During this brief encounter, I met his mother Jennie and his brother Marty. At the time, Larry had been married and divorced -- I'm still not sure how many times, but he had at least two children whom he was supporting. His daughter Chaia was a cute little girl about three years old, and I knew he had adopted or fostered an older boy then about 14 years old with one of his previous wives.

When Larry was arrested a few days before Christmas, in December 1971, the WIOD program manager -- Biggie Nevins, sadly now deceased -- met with me. He told me he would be looking for a permanent male host, but asked me to take over Larry's night-time show a few days a week. I was paid $50.00 a night, and was thrilled to have the money.

So I was on the air two or three nights a week from 11PM to 5 AM in an overnight talk and music show until April 1972 -- when the overnight host at WEEI in Boston, a broadcaster named Bruce Lee ("No, not THAT Bruce Lee!") contacted me. He said they were looking for a woman for an air shift. I applied, was flown up to Boston, interviewed for eight hours (!) and offered a job as the first woman talk show host with a full-time, daily show. The shift was 10 AM to 2 PM. I accepted, moved my car and my dog to Boston, joined the AFTRA local union, and started on the air in Boston on May 15, 1972. My kids came to join me a few weeks later after I had found an apartment.

I was divorced at the time, and the sole support of these two young children, ages 2 and 3. If I had listened to someone like Dr. Laura, with her questionable advice, I probably would have gone on welfare. As it was, I was able to get a daytime job, largely because of "affirmative action" by the CBS owned-and-operated Boston radio station, WEEI-AM. I still get a kick out of the marketing piece they put out about me. The headline was:

HAVE WE GOT A GIRL FOR YOU!

My children were in day-care six days a week because I had a Saturday shift, too.

Thankfully, I was able to support myself until I met and eventually married a widower with three children. Together, we raised five children on two working salaries. I did stay home with my son when he was in half-day kindergarten, but soon decided that I had a wonderful career and went back to work.

Yes, I missed a lot because I was working while they were in school. I tried to get home before they did, but my 10AM to 2PM shift often required research, reading, personal appearances, and other ancillary activities. Sometimes, we did have some hired help, but my husband's children were older and picked up some of the responsibility until I got home.

Laura's suggestion that you "stay home with your children during the day and work at night" was preposterous. I did Larry's nightly show and HAD TO HIRE DAY CARE HELP BOTH NIGHT AND DAY FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. Why? BECAUSE WHEN I GOT HOME AT 5:30 AM AFTER BEING UP ALL NIGHT ON THE AIR, I HAD TO SHOWER, GET THE KIDS OVER TO A DAYCARE PROVIDER AND THEN SLEEP UNTIL ABOUT 2 PM UNTIL I FELT HUMAN AGAIN.

I was a feminist then, and I am one still. I'm 67 years old, and still doing radio as a volunteer. I really despise Dr. Laura and the "spin" she has put on people of the female sex -- as opposed to what REALLY went on in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s with most women.

And I'm pretty upset with the fradulent B.S. that Dr. Laura puts out on radio. Luckily, she was not a success on television -- chalk that up to whatever you want. The fact that she purports to be Jewish is another disaster. I call myself a recovering Jew who now goes to Unitarian Universalist spiritual gatherings because Judaism was just too much for me to take.

I'm sorry that Dr. Laura's mother was estranged, and murdered (did they ever find out who did it?) -- and all of that. But there's just too much bravado in her stance to make her of any interest to women like me.

By the way, I'm married to one of the greatest guys in the world -- we're celebrating 34 years together next February 2007, and I brag about him all the time. I've always wondered why she doesn't EVER TALK about her husband.

In peace,

Radio_Lady in Oregon (Wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother)

PS. If you want to check my facts, go ahead. PM me and I'll set you straight. Good night and good luck.

I am in awe of what you have done & experienced in your life Radio_Lady - many thanks for sharing. I remember you asking about local children's shows & I told you about Lincoln Nebraska's Dale Holt & Morty Mouse & Kalamity Kate's Cartoon Corral starring Leta Powell Drake on KOLN-KGIN TV. The stuff I watched growing up in the 60's. My Mom was the first female Chamber of Commerce manager in the history of Nebraska. I have some big shoes to fill there! Except I don't even try to compete 'cuz she's the Queen & I love her!

My mother died in 1991 at age 71. She was a beautiful woman who married a handsome man; unfortunately, he was somewhat unstable while charming. I was their only child. I think of my mother a great deal these days, and wish I could visit with her for a few hours more.

Mother once told me she was jealous of me, because I had had the opportunity to develop a career and have my own life, apart from my husbands' lives. Her younger sister, now age 83, also mentioned that she had few opportunities as a young woman, and was almost forced to become a teacher -- I guess either that or a nurse.

Mother married at 18 when she was at the University of Pittsburgh. She had me at age 19, one year and one month later. My father was eight years older, and while he had finished law school in Pittsburgh, he had failed the bar examination. So he became a house painter until they moved to Florida, where he eventually completed the test.

Their lives were hard due to what I now believe was my father's undiagnosed bipolar disease. My beautiful young mother, who should have finished college and been able to set off to try her hand at journalism -- instead became a mother and a legal secretary to my father for the next several decades. She was meticulous and immaculate, and later we had our greatest disagreements over feminine sexuality and how it should be expressed.

I wonder what might have become of my mother if she had been able to explore and develop her own abilities and aptitudes. But in the pre-feminist climate of the 1940s and 1950s, she did what she knew how to do -- married, had a kid, and sublimated all of her abilities to my father. He, in turn, was a wizard with his smile, voice and words -- he had won college prizes for speeches he wrote and delivered. He was always clean shaven and he went to his office in downtown Miami -- driving a big 1953 Buick Riviera and smelling like Old Spice. He was fascinating, he played the violin (actually quite badly, but at least he was spirited). He cut the grass sometimes with an old mower, and moved his little family to a gorgeous house on a tidewater canal in North Miami.

My father drank more than I'd like to remember, fought with his only brother who lived in the southern section of Miami. My uncle and my father were estranged for a number of years. Dad had at least one mistress, as I found out later. He painted with pastels and oils, tried his hand at inventing -- a coin-operated microscope machine, which he patented. Also, he scupted several unique pieces.

Dad died before Mom, in 1988, from heart problems, obesity and who knows what else. They were married for forty-one unholy years. I try to remember the good times, and they came before a final sexual advance from father to daughter became the very last difficult memory I have had to suppress.

This was in 1971, when I was divorced with a two-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son. I was trying to put my life back on track and was seeing Larry King, with whom I had struck up an odd sort of intimacy. I delivered Larry's newspaper columns to the Miami Beach Sun. I went to social events where he promised he would show up, but never did. I even brought Larry some chicken soup when he was very sick with a cold.

I had to resort to signing up with an escort service to make ends meet. Now, you understand, this charmingly named company (RENT-A-BIRD -- I'm not making this up -- was registered with the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. These were PAID DATES and there was NO PROSTITUTION. As a matter of fact, the two principals in the company, named Alan and Betty, periodically sent security personnel out with us girls to insure that it was just a pick-up at the hotel, a dinner, some drinking and dancing, and then back to the hotel. During the daytime, I was working for a pittance at a marketing research company.

I went to my father's office one day, and he told me he would give me a check for $3,000 so I could keep my little family together for another couple of months. But, before he signed, he requested a sexual interlude with me which I'd rather not describe here. Suffice it to say that it was rather Clintonesque in character. I acquiesced because I needed the money. I never forgave him for it; and he never talked to me again about it -- nor did he ever apologize. After he died, my mother still didn't believe it had ever happened. I gave up trying to tell her that it was the truth.

Such are the things many families have built.

Here is the cast of characters in the 1940s. I'm the little girl with the smile.

that her mom was DEAD for a couple of weeks before "Dr" Laura even knew about it. Seems while she thinks adults should forgive THEIR abusive parents, she had little to do with her mother.

Her best moment was when Claire Yarlett played her alter ego "Jenna Jacobs: on "The West Wing" and President Bartlet read her off: "One last thing: while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tight-Ass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits."

22. Interesting to know what kind of mother "Dr." Laura
is. I heard her on her radio show a couple of years ago. She was going off on one of her son's teachers because he had received a low grade and she was convinced it was because the teacher was a liberal who was getting back at her through her son.
Let me tell you...she's ruining her kid with that kind of talk.
My parents both taught school in a small town. They knew who the good teachers were. And who the bad teachers were. And, yes, they knew I had bad teachers, occasionally. But they never let on. When my sister and brother and I complained, they told us to buckle down and do the work.
When you tell your kid "hey, it's not YOU. It's the TEACHER" you're setting the kid up for a lifetime of excuses. It's not ME.
She's a woman who broke up a man's marriage, a man with children. She committed adultery. She's a working mom. Who condemns working moms.
What is genuine about this woman?
Not her credentials.
Not her morals.
Not her diligence as a daughter (hey, Dr. Laura. Honor thy mother and father.)
It's a mystery to me why anyone with a functioning brain would take advice from this fraud.

23. Think twice about the "Dr." in Dr. Laura
http://www.ralphmag.org/dr-lauraZA.html

snip "Schlessinger has a PhD, but it isn't in psychology --- it's in physiology. Her doctorate was entitled Effects of Insulin on 3-0 Methylglucose Transport in Isolated Rat Adipocytes. According to one of her professors, she spent most of her doctoral training time "pulling fat pads off rat testicles."

I asked a friend of mine who works in the field what "Methylglucose Transport" is all about. He said,

It's the standard, routine, crushingly dull thing done back in the days before DNA. Physiology is the term used for lower-level biochemistry."

I take offense to that.

Biochemistry and physiology are different, but both are considered advanced fields. Physiology involves far more than "lower-level" biochemistry, especially with the advent of genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomic techniques.

However, I can agree that physiologists are not qualified psychologists.

Dr. L. made the HUGE MISTAKE of snubbing Bill Balance. Sooooooooo......Balance who did not need the money, went home and pulled out of storage some NUDE pictures he had taked of Dr. L. back went she was doing him....AND....(gawd love him) he sold them to the media!!!! Good ol' Dr. L. went down to the fed ct in LA and tried to get a restraining order stopping publication and she lost. So, for all to see on the web there are NUDE photos of Dr. Laura ~~ back when she was young and before she bleached her hair blonde!

Bill Balance ~~ I just fucking love you! RIP, my friend!

It all began on Oct. 19, when Web-porn giant Internet Entertainment Group (IEG), which previously made headlines with the Pamela and Tommy Lee honeymoon sex tapes, posted a dozen pictures purporting to be Schlessinger on its ClubLove Web site. The photos -- taken by Schlessinger's mentor, California radio personality Bill Ballance -- displayed a sportive, 20-something Dr. Laura in various stages of undress, including one classic open-legged money shot. To enhance viewing pleasure, IEG offered "Live Picture Technology," enabling users to zoom in on specific body parts. As Seth Warshavsky, the entrepreneur behind IEG, boasted on the site, "You can point your arrow on any part of her body and blow it up to full size!"

26. It gets better:
From a 1998 article, comments from Bill Balance:

The photos were taken by Ballance nearly thirty years ago. Schlessinger was married, and Ballance -- who recently turned 80 -- was playing the role of father figure and coach, having helped Schlessinger along in her career. The aging radio jock said that Laura willingly posed for the photos, some of which show frontal nudity. "We had the kind of love affair that most men would die for," Ballance writes on the IEG web site. "Of course I was much older than her, but that didn't bother her. She was still married to her first husband at the time although she told me she was going to get a divorce." Twisting the knife, Ballance then goes on to add, "I remember the affair as thought it were yesterday. Nobody who ever went to bed with Dr. Laura will ever forget it. She was quite something between the sheets."

28. I SO TOTALLY REMEMBER MY MOM LISTENING TO BILL!!
In the 60s & 70s, he was the fantasy of all the San Fernando Valley housewives of that era, they would call and he'd be all "hello, lovely Marie! Oh it's beautiful Delores, hello my darling." He kind of had a Gary Owens thing, like he was lampooning old time radio in the swingin' 60's. He's a real So CA radio legend, when I heard about that Dr. Laura thing he let loose a few years ago did I EVER toast him and LMAO!!!

46. Whew, Hepburn -- I was too busy moving cross country in 1998,
and didn't get to see the pictures or read this story about Ms. S. (clearly I know about her misuse of the title of Dr.) in the buff.

I'm officially going to look at the only sexy photo I recall being in my possession and anybody elses. I will try to POST it right here at the DU! And, guess what? You'll be able to see it for FREE!

I can do the correct degrees of separation of me from Dr. Schlessinger, two radio hosts who helped break down the "men only" walls of broadcasting -- each in her own way. That's all about all we have in common.

By the way, is Dr. Joy Browne still on the air?
