Apparently House republicans tolerate pedophiles in their midst
Look at the 200 plus republicans in the House who are voting against referring Foley to the ethics committee. C-span now

5. Republicans should eat this vote in November.
They have lost all cover as a political party, they simply reflect the very worst of American values.

8. semantics. I don't really care at all about the distinction.
like I don't have to wait until Bush and the republicans completely take over the country and strip us of all of our rights before I call them fascist.

9. Far from semantics... under your definition, statutory rape is considered
pedophilia.

What you're looking for is Pederasty.

23. I thought about pointing out that inconsistency, but apparently the
consensus is to make as much political hay out of this as is possible. The term 'pedophile' pushes more buttons, incites more outrage, regardless of how inapplicable it is to this case. Republican hypocrisy and the cover-up by their leadership are the real stories here. But never let it be said that Democrats are above employing shrill, bombastic and overblown rhetoric to score a few political points.

24. not just about political points to me
I aim to tear down every remnant of those who attacked and sought to possess our country fro their own greed and hunger for power. Foley is not just a pedowhatever, he's a deadbeat republican who doesn't deserve a moment of defense just to make some fine point about semantics.

25. Call it a crusade if you like, but it's still politics
I've seen no evidence of a crime having been committed. I've seen no evidence that the youth was threatened or otherwise coerced. Making lurid comments to a 16 year old is certainly unethical and the nature of Foley's position makes that all the more repugnant, but let us not deceive ourselves that this is anything more than a horribly embarrassing situation for the Republicans. I'm not condemning the overreaction, in fact I'm applauding it. The guy handed the Democrats a house seat - it's virtually uncontested at this point. By all mean, try to parley that into more. If enough mud gets thrown it's bound to stick to some of them. The only ones that will suffer from all the hyperbole are Republicans, and to some extent, the gay community. But I'm sure the gays will take one for the team. It's not like the fundamentalists are lacking opportunities to portray gays as anything but pedophiles, either practicing or potential. Oh, I guess you've done their work for them, but that's the nature of politics.

15. Every single ones of us should be sending LTTE on this!
The extreme hypocrisy in the comparison of the lynching of Bill Clinton with the coddling of Foley should be exposed.

The so-called Christian right should have this shoved in their faces... they have supported this party which condones grown men taking advantage of adolescents. They should be HORRIFIED by this. They should stand up and DEMAND accountability from the the party THEY helped put in power.

16. they will not be horrified that it was one of them
IIRC, there has been questions regarding Foley's sexuality in the past. they will turn on him and tear him apart to promote their anti-gay agenda saying this is proof that all gays are pedophiles

18. And House Democrats tolerated Studds, tho he nor Foley are pedophiles.
Careful when throwing stones. Studds admitted a sexual relationship with a 17 year old page. He said it was nobody's business and was re-elected every two years for a decade until he decided to retire. At 16 and 17, both young men are over the legal age of consent in Washington D.C. Your careless accusation of pedophilia contributes to a group-think that treats sexually mature young adults like children to be protected from all things sexual: comprehensive sex education, birth control, disease prevention, or any preparation to deal with the inevitable unwanted sexual advances. I'm not aware that Foley's been accused of going as far as Studds. yet he resigned while Studds defiantly stood his ground.

Do you really want to make this about anything other than Republican "family values" hypocrisy?

22. careless? hypocricy?
the republicans have enough of those to more than compensate for my bias.

I give no quarter to ANYONE who manipulates these pages in this manner. This is not new, as you have noted. These incidents should be denounced by our party in the strongest of terms.

Are you aware that it was the page who complained of the repeated harrassment? His words were, "sick, sick, sick, sick, sick, sick, . . ."
