14. Yeah, really - people act so damn surprised, traumatized, and
violated to find a possum in the garbage, a bear in the yard, or a squirrel in the baby carriage - WTF did they expect? Move into an animal's habitat and teach it that food comes from people; of course that critter is going to become accustomed to humans and probably aggressive, eventually...

4. Mr. Burns
We run them over without giving a damn. I see no reason they shouldn't attack us. I'm surprised every species doesn't do it. We test on them, we chuck them around in giant metal bins determining which to eat and which to breed, like I said, we run them over. They might get a few of us, but we'll take them all down if need be. That's what we do.

That's what happens when people feed squirrels. They get demanding and a bit wacko..or in this case a lot wacko.

16. It's gangs of urban raccoons up in Washington!
http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=webraccoonattacks22&date=20060822

~snip~

A fierce group of raccoons in a west end neighborhood has killed 10 cats, attacked a small dog and bitten at least one pet owner who had to get rabies shots, area residents say.

Some have taken to carrying pepper spray to ward off the masked marauders and the woman who was bitten now carries an iron pipe when she goes outside at night.

"It's a new breed," said Tamara Keeton, who with Kari Hall started a raccoon watch after an emotional neighborhood meeting drew 40 people. "They're urban raccoons, and they're not afraid."

17. We have raccoons here in Colorado Springs.
They killed two of our cats...well, they weren't very bright cats. But they also were not afraid of our very large dog who barked at them. They stood their ground and got all puffed up. They apparently will attack large dogs as well.

And as for the squirrels...ours have been quite frisky and bold lately, I definitely think feeding them may be a problem.

22. We have them too
It's dog food and cat food that attracts them here. My daughter used to leave it out for her cat and she can't anymore. They come right up to her front porch and aren't a bit afraid. They don't kill animals here, I guess there's enough other food for them. Lots of blackberries too. She lives closer to the creek than I do, she had bears last year. Freaky!!

Edited on Sat Sep-30-06 08:02 PM by Leopolds Ghost
Run away! Run away!

"4 Pullest thou the pin of thy holy hand grenade, that thou mayest blow thine four-legged enemy into tiny bits, in His mercy. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number thou shalt count is Three.

5 Neither one nor two will thou count, excepting that thou followest with three. Five is right out.

6 And they did feast upon the crabs, and the squirrels, and the shallots..."

I understand the wildlife that has either been fed or otherwise acclimated to being safe in the cities. But the crab storming the beach - now that's just freaky weird.

28. I took a bag of peanuts to Central Park one day
and began tossing them to the squirrels, who were quite used to being fed by humans. More and more squirrels converged and some even came from behind me and began jumping on my back. A crowd gathered as I hand-fed them, but it became a little overwhelming. I was accustomed to close contact with squirrels, having helped my daughter do rehab for orphans. I have a few out back who come up to me when I arrive home, waiting for peanuts. Sitting outside in a lawn chair can get to be a problem, though, if you begin to feed them. It's probably best not to.
