Homeland Security To Confiscate Bank Safe Deposit Box Contents
Homeland Security To Confiscate Bank Safety Deposit Box Contents

http://bellaciao.org/en/article.php3?id_article=10012

A family member from Irvine, CA (who’s a branch manager at Bank of America) told us two weeks ago that her bank held a "workshop" where the last two days were dedicated to discussing their bank’s new security measures. During these last two days, the workshop included members from the Homeland Security Office who instructed them on how to field calls from customers and what they are to tell them in the event of a national disaster. She said they were told how only agents from Homeland Security (during such an event) would be in charge of opening safe deposit boxes and determining what items would be given to bank customers.

At this point they were told that no weapons, cash, gold, or silver will be allowed to leave the bank - only various paperwork will be given to its owners. After discussing the matter with them at length, she and the other employees were then told not to discuss the subject with anyone.

2. Gold and Silver...
These would not be allowed to leave the bank. That is interesting - if the value of the dollar falls significantly, "hard" currencies such as gold and silver will become extremely attractive. Look at the price of gold over the last several months. Oh...and Iran is expected to start trrading oil in EUROS not dollars.....do the math?!

4. and exactly how is this different than Homeland Security
invading your home and collecting all your jewelry, weapons and cash?

Sorry, there just aren't enough Homeland Security to enforce this.

Also, after the "national disaster" was averted, those banks would be OUT OF BUSINESS forever, provided they weren't burned to the ground in riots.

I sure hope this isn't real, because the level of stupidity and incompetence of our fascist little brownshirt Homeland Security would be just DAZZLING.

10. I wish I shared your viewpoint..
.... they won't have to do it, the banks will happily comply.

Personally, I've always thought of safe deposit boxes as a joke, there are much better and less expensive ways to protect your valuables IMHO, so I'm not concerned about this personally.

15. These kinds of sweeping laws are intended for a few IMHO
The only need the one or two Homeland Security people to go to the one or two safety deposit boxes that they really want to get at. It's not you or me they are worried about--it's those who have stashed safe papers or incriminating evidence that must be worried.

18. Well not in about a week or two
that's about how long it takes to get from DU to the general public for broader substantiation, and in that time anyone who IS keeping anything of value in their safe deposit boxes won't be any more. I sure as heck wouldn't. In fact I'd put it in a foreign vault in a non-U.S. bank in a heartbeat.

Heck this might make a tidy little business if you could get a secure vault to open for storage. It's one thing to tell a bank, which falls under FDIC jurisdiction that they have to comply with federal law, but a secure vault run as a private business? Piffle.

Man this really brings out the anti-authoritarian in me. We are living in nazi germany. It's not how do you prove it, it's how can anyone claim we're not? Just wait until we have to start carrying papers with checkpoint authorizations, or have to have our expenses pre-approved by the bank.

I'd like to get some substantiation on this story.

20. Right, this is along the same type of thinking as...
I have nothing to hide so they can tap my phone lines all they want.

It's about privacy. period.

So if you hold bond certificates or stock certificates, you are okay with them taking those out of your safety deposit box????

Sorry but the letters from my dead father are quite important to me and I like to keep them safe so that's why I put them in a safety deposit box. I think I would be a little bit more than pissed off if those fuckers from HLS decided that those needed to be taken.

See? Privacy.

5. I'm suspect as to whether this is true
You'd think if bank employees were being told about this, they wouldn't be able to keep it quiet.

Couldn't find anything on Snopes, but I'm still betting it is rumor.

Although, I know people that won't use safety deposit boxes and haven't ever for their valuables due to fears that the government would some day confiscate them. Long before Homeland Security too.

6. Well, it sounds like it is time to dig a hole
Underneath the food dish that belongs to your mean, vicious dog, and put your valuables in there.

This is flat out stupid, I know many people who keep such things as cash, precious metals and guns in their safety deposit box precisely in case the shit hits the fan. And now they won't have access to them? What kind of fucked up shit is that?

Everyday a new outrage is perpatrated on the American people. When will enough of them finally wake up to kick these bastards out of office.

12. For the purposes..
... of having something stored that I can access at a time of emergency, a bank safe deposit box would be among my last choices.

What if the bank doesn't open? What kind of security are you going to have in a panic situation trying to remove your valuables from a place where everyone knows what you are doing? What if the shit hits the fan on a Friday afternoon, great - best case is Monday morning.

Safe deposit boxes suck.

21. Yeah, the "immigration emergency" stuff is creepy, indeed.
If I were to guess, I'd say that the Admin is freaking out over the large Iranian community in the United States. If they attack Iran, they're probably assuming that the Iranians would respond by trying to conduct terrorist operations in the United States. We could have another Japanese Internment-type situation, I suppose.

Back during the Reagan years, the Iran/Contra guys (some of them now in the Bush Admin) believed that the U.S. would use the Contra war as an excuse to intervene directly with U.S. forces. They had actually drawn up contingency plans to deal with civil unrest within the Latin American community. That is, they thought they would have to round up large numbers of Latinos and put them in concentration camps. Talk about paranoid.

OTOH, Iranian retaliation via terrorism is not paranoid; I think that's a reasonable assumption, especially if Iran were to be invaded. I'm not so sure they'd want to stage attacks in the U.S. in the event of U.S. air strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, as that would provide a pretext for just about anything Dirty Dick and Daffy Don wanted to do.

We're living in dangerous times. Cheney, his Neocon cabal, and our delusional Dimwit in Chief seem determined to forge ahead with a disastrous, downright loony foreign policy. I remember Woolsey talking about "World War IV," and thinking "this guy's nuts." Well, he is nuts. But, when he made that remark it was less an observation of fact than a communicating of a vision, and the Neocons aren't going to stop pursuing that vision until somebody stops them.

We really need some independent confirmation on this.

But I got to tell you, some of the headlines and posts today are really causing great anxiety for me. I think I need to lay down.
