FOLEY STORY BECOMES MUSHROOM CLOUD!!! NYT FRONT PAGE

G.O.P. Leaders Knew in Late ’05 of E-Mail

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 — Top House Republicans knew for months about e-mail traffic between Representative Mark Foley and a former teenage page, but kept the matter secret and allowed Mr. Foley to remain head of a Congressional caucus on children’s issues, Republican lawmakers said Saturday.

--snip--

"Anyone who was involved in the chain of information should come forward and tell when they were told, what they were told and what they did with the information when they got it," said Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York. Mr. King called it a "dark day" for Congress and said, "We need a full investigation."

Representative Christopher Shays, Republican of Connecticut, said any leader who had been aware of Mr. Foley's behavior and failed to take action should step down. "If they knew or should have known the extent of this problem, they should not serve in leadership," Mr. Shays said.

--snip--

This story just became a mushroom cloud. :nuke: :wow:

Unfortunately, the public will probably have their attention diverted from Foley in order to kiss the feet of our esteemed dictator for saving us from the those scary Mooslums. Rove is arranging it right now. Does the public never catch on??? :banghead:

67. The "i'm not one of them" Republicans
The Republican campaign song for 2006

50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

The problem is all inside your head
She said to me
The answer is easy if you
Take it logically
I’d like to help you in your struggle
To be free
There must be fifty ways
To leave your lover

She said it’s really not my habit
To intrude
Furthermore, I hope my meaning
Won’t be lost or misconstrued
But I’ll repeat myself
At the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways
To leave your lover
Fifty ways to leave your lover

CHORUS:
You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

She said it grieves me so
To see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do
To make you smile again
I said I appreciate that
And would you please explain
About the fifty ways

The emails are fairly tame. It's the IM that are sleazy. Some times they clarify that point in the newscast. If someone just got the emails then it's not such a big thing. But the IMs are where they talked about masturbation and boxer shorts, etc.

79. Where there's smoke, there's fire
The repedophile leadership knew about the emails for months and kept them secret. The leadership also did not investigate to see if there were other improprieties or crimes. Why not? If the congress critter was a member of the Democratic party, we would have had a sequel to the Starr Report. The repedophile leadership did a "nothing to see here folks" before taking any basic investigative steps. Hell, they could have called Dateline NBC to bait the sumnabitch. Why? Because protecting kids from a pervert isn't on their agenda.

Shays is probably worried about this for reasons closer to home. The former repuke mayor of Waterbury was convicted of sexually assaulting two girls, ages 8 and 10 at the the time of the attacks, and this received wide media attention in CT. Shays is concerned about guilt by association.

14. Hey! Anyone remember that thread here yesterday about Free Republic-
the one where all the Freepers were blaming Democrats for keeping this knowledge secret and 'endangering children so they could score political points at a crucial time'?

I realize it would hardly be an event to uncover deep hypocrisy at Free Republic, but what do you suppose those morons think about this? Is hiding this knowledge for political reasons still a horrible, unforgivable sin, Freeps?

18. Not if it's repukes, it isn't.
Freeps have an uncanny ability to blame everything on anyone and anything else, even if they have nothing to do with it. Everything's the fault of Dems or Klintoon, regardless of what it is or what the circumstances are. When a repuke does something, it's always the fault of Dems. ALWAYS.

From http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/9/30/212758/946 :

"Response to Hastert/Foley Pagegate Scandal, by John Laesch

Sat Sep 30, 2006 at 06:27:57 PM PDT

This is John Laesch, the Democratic candidate running against Dennis Hastert. Our campaign office reports that the phone has not stopped ringing all day and the Inbox on our e-mail account is exploding. We know that Dennis Hastert has been the "cover-up" guy for everything that is wrong in Washington. Hastert has been cleaning up messes all the way from this Wednesday's "get out of jail free" detainee bill that he gave to George Bush to gutting house ethics rules after Tom DeLay was indicted.

I am currently working with Danny Stover who is running against Shimkus in Illinois' 19th District ... This morning we held a press conference in St. Charles, IL and I basically said that it is time for Dennis Hastert to resign. If he does not do the honorable thing then voters should fire him on Nov. 7th. I started my speech with some of Hastert's own words from a 1998 press conference. "Even though our children may be at home with the doors locked," "that doesn't mean that they are safe. We must continue to be proactive in warding off pedophiles and other creeps who want to take advantage of our children...It's not infringing on liberties, it's about protecting our kids."

Apparently proactive in Washington means waiting 11 months... Exactly one month ago today Dennis Hastert made the front page of the Kane County Chronicle, a local paper, that covered Dennis Hastert's town hall forum on Internet safety. Protecting children is OK for Dennis Hastert when it is earning him votes, but he doesn't give a damn when it is a page working on Capital Hill. The fact that Hastert tried to cover this up is reason enough for him to resign. ..."

The GOP parents whose kids are acepted as congressional pages are NOT the Wal-mart-shoppin', NASCAR-watchin', red-state values voters.

They are the kleptocrats who have been abusing the above-mentioned folk. These pages are the children of "Bush Pioneers". And their parents couldn't give two shits less about them, or they'd be calling for the GOP leadership's heads on platters.

I mean, c'mon! If the Democrats take back the Congress, those folks might not be able to afford that private island they've had their eye on.

There is a kind of wierd lethargy and when you point out the truly heinous, immoral shit most Repukes are engaged in, soccer moms just point to terra, terra, terra.

I know. I've had these conversations with real soccer moms in the most red-district areas and they just can't wrap their brains around "cutting and running" or "GW Bush is a good Christian".

I've had real arguments with these people, asking for real evidence of their beliefs ("please give me any evidence that the violence in Iraq is only perpetuated by foreigners, not just disgruntled Iraqis!") and they just melt away, and then avoid me for weeks, months (years!) rather than provide proof.

with the Greed-Oil-Perversion party once the screen is pulled back (they don't mind as long as no one else sees through the illusion but once everybody does, watch them turn, like buzzed sheep).

66. Why did the NYTimes put a picture of Mahoney & Kerry with their story?
I know that Mahoney is the opponent, but I also know that the majority of Americans glance at the front page of their newspaper and never really bother to read the articles. So now here's an major headline banner about a sex scandal with underage boys and with it is a picture of probably someone does not recognize and John Kerry, whom everyone recognizes.

I glance at that and to me it's almost like they want to drag in the democrats somehow remotely into this story. Kerry's involvement is nothing more than campaigning for the democratic candidate. They should have had a picture of Foley hanging out with other Repukes!

Front page is reason why GOP will win election after all. It's the hidden minions (who, miraculously, never voted before) in the churches that will explain the amazing victories in 2006 and 2008.

Front page is also Schwarzennegger's sudden surge ahead in the polls.

99. Tight congressional races
I wish Shimkus would have a tight race, but he won't. Here in his district in Southern Illinois, the Democrats have passed on this race. I had to go online to even find the name of our candidate. I saw it on the ballot back in the Spring and not one word in the media, not one yard sign so far. A little work and a lot of money would help a lot. Shimkus can and does do as he pleases-he hasn't had a "real race" since our district was carved up like a Thanksgiving Turkey. Shimkus and his party were the only ones giving any "thanks".

104. Stover Challenges Shimkus in IL-19.
Stover Challenges Shimkus: No Congressional Pay Raise Until Congress Takes Care of Working Families

Danny Stover, candidate for the United States Congress in Illinois' 19th District, is calling upon his opponent, incumbent John Shimkus, to reject a Congressional pay raise until such time that Congress mandates a raise in the federal minimum wage.

"As a constituent of Rep. Shimkus, I would like to see him do the honorable thing and vote to give American workers a raise before giving himself and his colleagues one," says Stover.

The minimum wage has not been raised since 1997, the second-longest period of time the wage has gone without being adjusted for inflation. In that time 530,000 more American families have dropped below the poverty line, according to the US Census Bureau. In those nearly ten years, however, Congress has seen fit to raise it's own annual salary by more than $30,000.

John Shimkus, however, has allowed his own salary to increase based upon rising cost of living, while steadfastly refusing to help American families living on a minimum wage that has dropped 17% of its value in the last ten years alone.

"His position illustrates neglect and abandonment of working Americans," says Stover.

The Congressional pay raises occur automatically with the approval of a certain appropriations bill each year. This automatic increase, signed into law in 1989 with the Ethics Reform Act, adjusts the salaries of Members of Congress based upon the rising cost. Congress can, however, vote down the pay increase, as it has done five times since the law was passed.

The questions that Mr. Stover is asking are simple - Are Members of Congress the only ones suffering from rising costs of living? Are they the only ones having to pay $40 at the pump to fill their cars to get to work? Are they the only ones suffering from the rising cost of health care in this country? Are they the only ones trying to send their kids to college?

The answer is, of course, no. If the cost of living has risen enough for Members of Congress to raise their own salary by $30,000, then it's gone up enough to warrant a raise in the abysmally low minimum wage.

"Nation wide, profits are up and incomes of average americans are down," Mr. Stover points out. "People are deeper in debt, the employment rate has fallen while poverty is on the rise. Health care costs and gasoline prices erode our income".

About 48% of minimum wage earners are between the bread-winning ages of 25 and 64, contrary to the rants of opponents about teenagers in entry level jobs. They're office assistants. They're child-care teachers. They're landscaping workers. Even a good majority of those teenagers working minimum wage jobs live in households making below-average income.

It's time to treat the plight of America's working families with the same respect that Congress gives itself. Don't raise Congressional salaries until the minimum wage has been raised.
