Bush's sister: "He wasn’t a fall down drunk."

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2372049,00.html

Sister of Bush tells some home truths

<snip>

It was George W who paired his father with Bill Clinton, another former president, as a fundraiser after the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004. It was an inspired choice. The two former White House occupants got on so well that Clinton sent Bush a cartoon depicting them as a gay couple. “George, maybe we’d better cool it,” he wrote.

Jeb Bush, governor of Florida and brother to Koch and George W, remains suspicious of the relationship. “To be candid, my brother Jeb maintains dad is being used,” Koch reveals in her book. Koch, too, was “a little sceptical at first” but has warmed to the double act. She has been charmed by the tenderness and respect that Clinton has shown her father, now 82.

George W once joked, “I turned my mother’s hair white”, but according to Koch her father never lost confidence in his son, even in his drinking years. “He wasn’t a fall down drunk. He made a decision in his life not to drink any more,” Koch said.

George W’s future wife Laura helped to straighten him out. Marvin, another brother, described her appearance as “Audrey Hepburn arriving at Animal House”. The family gets together at Camp David where there is little talk about politics and “a lot of laughter”.

4. ever hear an alcoholic call him/herself a *functioning alcoholic*?
Bingo.

But most times the *functioning* goes out the window and everyone around the drunk covers up for them. But they still maintain they *function* just fine.

13. HST even wrote in one of his books..
that he was at a party back in the 70s with the Shrub and Bush was the person who couldn't handle his shit. He was the guy at the party that couldn't handle the alcohol and blow and ended up puking his guts out. If I was more motivated at the moment, I'd look for the quote.

34. There was a monkey, passed out in his bathtub.
From: http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/funnyquotes/a/huntersthompson.htm

"He knew who I was, at that time, because I had a reputation as a writer. I knew he was part of the Bush dynasty. But he was nothing, he offered nothing, and he promised nothing. He had no humor. He was insignificant in every way and consequently I didn't pay much attention to him. But when he passed out in my bathtub, then I noticed him. I'd been in another room, talking to the bright people. I had to have him taken away." - on meeting George W Bush at Thompson's Super Bowl party in Houston in 1974

Here's another nice one from HST:

"Bush is a natural-born loser with a filthy-rich daddy who pimped his son out to rich oil-mongers. He hates music, football and sex, in no particular order, and he is no fun at all."

Yet they were "paired" by his idiot brother.

Oh yeah I guess BC needs the positive PR that only a Bu$h can bring upon one who's been publicly vilified. :sarcasm:

24. Ex-presidents must have things on their mind only another ex-president
would understand, IMO. Thus I'm not surprised BigDawg and Poppy Bush have an affinity with each other. Which other ex-presidents does either one have to talk to?

One followed the other directly in office, then Junior took over. If they want to talk to ex-presidents who are alive and mentally alert, the only other choice either of them has besides each other is Jimmy Carter.

Carter and Bush Sr. could not be more different and may not feel at ease with each other. Clinton has been feuding with Carter for decades, IIRC. It seems that Bill blames Jimmy for a gubernatorial re-election loss after Carter convinced him to host a very unpopular refugee facility in Arkansas, at Fort Something-or-other.

So all BigDawg and Poppy may really have is each other when they want to talk shop.

Edited on Sun Oct-01-06 11:32 AM by Marr
Yes, a drunk, but "not a fall-down drunk". Oh, well- then step right up and take the oath.

It kind of makes me think of the new pope, and his ties to Hitler Youth when he was a child. People said, "he was only a little kid at the time", but really- why compromise? There's not exactly a shortage of Catholics from which to choose. Ratzinger's childhood associations may not make him a bad person, but surely there is someone as qualified as Ratzinger who was NOT in Hitler Youth...?

Edited on Mon Oct-02-06 11:29 AM by ProfessorGAC
So, partying and drinking had nothing to do with his business failures. (All three of them.) "He wasn't a falling down drunk."

Then, he was completely incompetent and clueless.

Way to defend your brother, sis.

36. talk about damning with faint praise!
People raised by Barbara Bush aren't exactly known for dishing out flattery -- or for being particularly forgiving, even towards their nearest and dearest. I suspect that "Doro" saw quite a lot of W's failings (she was in the car when he was pulled over for his DUI) and that her word choice is deliberate.
