Ex-CIA analyst- Iraq war a 'crime'
Sunday, October 1, 2006
RUDI KELLER ~ Southeast Missourian

.. "There is no escaping the conclusion that what our country has done is commit the supreme international crime of starting a war of aggression," McGovern said. Aggressive war, he noted, was considered the most serious charge against Nazi leaders at Nuremberg because all other crimes of that regime stemmed from the charge of starting a war ..

McGovern spent 27 years in the CIA. He reached the top echelons of the agency, conducting one-on-one briefings with the highest officials, chairing the National Intelligence Estimates group and, upon retiring, receiving a medal of commendation from President George H.W. Bush ..

"I don't know how you honor soldiers who have died in this war by putting more of them at risk," McGovern said.

Now is the time for action, McGovern said, alluding to the coming election without mentioning it directly. It is important, he said, "that we not sit by and wring our hands and say 'what can we do?' We need to decide what to do and do it -- and do it in the next six weeks." ..

Camp Democracy Panel on War and the Media
Camp Democracy
Washington, District of Columbia (United States)

Cohen, Jeff Founder, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting
Taicher, Robert Filmmaker
McGovern, Ray Co-Founder, Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity
Norman, Jeff Founder, Take On the Media

Jeff Cohen and Ray McGovern talked about the corporate media's coverage of the Bush administration during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. They argued that the corporate media failed in its responsibility to ask tough questions and instead decided to largely act as cheerleaders for going to war. Jeff Cohen addressed this issue through his experience producing MSNBC's Phil Donahue Show during this period and talked about why the show was cancelled just prior to the invasion. Ray McGovern, who worked as a CIA analyst for 27 years, discussed what the intelligence community was saying about Iraq prior to the war and talked about a confrontation he had with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld during an event in Atlanta in May 2006. After their presentations, writer/director Robert Taicher made remarks about his new documentary Rush to War. The discussion was moderated by Jeff Norman.

This panel was one of the events that took place at Camp Democracy, a two week long anti-war protest and teach-in held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. between September 5 and September 21, 2006.
