The Wrong Message
Rep. Mark Foley helped exploited children by day. A slew of e-mails suggests he exploited them by night. How the scandal may affect the fight for Capitol Hill.

"Foley's sexual leanings were also well known, or at least suspected, by a particularly vulnerable group on Capitol Hill. Every year Congress hires about 100 pages, who can be seen in their distinctive blue uniforms scurrying through the halls, running errands for lawmakers...

A former female page, who asked not to be identified to protect her privacy, told NEWSWEEK that she and other pages had regularly seen Foley stop and talk to pages on the House floor and in the cloakroom, lingering with them and asking them to describe their experiences in Congress. "We just gradually figured out he was flirting with the guys," said the page. "It made a lot of the guys uneasy. He was kind of creepy."

1. I'd like to think at least one of them told him to buzz off, turned

2. This makes me wonder...

Are programs such as the Congressional Page program created by a few, subconsciously perhaps, to serve the same sick needs as other structures such as the Catholic church's system of alter boys?

Do a few sick perverts create these organizational structures that give them access to young boys?

4. Pages are of both sexes but I am sure Pedophiles gravitate toward such

programs whether it being Congress or Church. They use their position of Power to get what they want..that is why IMO the crime should be even more severe for people like Foley or a Pastor or Policeman. For the Republican Leadership to cover this up and do nothing about it and allow Foley to just keep on soliciting young boys for sex is quite disturbing..I can imagine a cover-up and even expect such but for them to allow it to continue unabated is unconscionable. This should disturb even the most rabid wing nut, though if torture doesn't bother them why would this? :shrug:

3. I'm sure now a lot of people will remember things

Stopping to talk with someone is not necessarily enough to evoke suspision, but now I'm sure his behavior in all manners will be scrutinzed and dots will be connected. Some poor kids will probably come forward now.

5. So it wasn't just over the "distance" of e-mail that he approached boys

His personal presence increases the likelihood that some kids may have been physically touched. Ick.
