Amy Goodman was here last night.
http://democracynow.org/She was part of as fundraiser for KKFI, our local independent radio station. Her brother David spoke first (and boy does he ever look like his sister!)
He talked about the book tour they have been on since Labor Day and told stories of people they have met on their tour. He said they heard about a soldier who is walking across Utah to commemorate our soldiers who have died in Iraq. And he talked very poignantly about Arlington West, a memorial to our soldiers on the beach on California created by Veterans for Peace. One theme of both David and Amy’s speech was the importance of the media and the images it gives us. Since the media is not giving us images of our dead soldiers, Arlington West is fulfilling a need.
David talked about the tragedy of the torture bill passed this past week and emphasized that it took away rights established in 1215 in the Magna Carta. He also mentioned how the Pentagon has spent money on studies designed to come up with ways to make mothers of soldiers more supportive of the military. And he noted ‘moral character waver policies’ and the disastrous results they have had, specifically the soldier who murdered the little girl in Haditha.

http://www.petitiononline.com/6725/petition.htmlhttp://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/8425/CIAPRESS.HTMThen Amy spoke. She told about NY Governor Pataki asking that a piece of that statue of Sadaam be buried at the WTC site. She said if that is done, it will be the first real connection between Sadaam and 9/11.
Amy also talked about the images of Iraq that have been kept from us. If our media showed us these images for just one week, imagine the effect. She said when she interviewed Aaron Brown, the former CNN reporter, she asked him where are the pictures of Iraq. He said “It’s a matter of taste”. Amy told him “It’s war that is tasteless.”
Amy said the media is the fourth estate, not for the state.
Then she told t-shirt stories. Since I was wearing my IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY t-shirt, I liked this part of her speech very much. She told us about the WE WILL NOT BE SILENT t-shirt
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/09/01/1338241Amy said “We Will Not Be Silent” should be the hypocratic oath of the media today.
And she told about a man and his son in NY who were asked to leave a mall and placed in handcuffs for wearing anti-war t-shirts they had bought at the mall.
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb279/is_200304/ai_n8184748Amy said she will begin writing a new column on Oct 24. (Contact your local newspapers, Duers!)
Amy closed by talking about Henry Kissinger and his history. She said is a tragedy that he is such a close adviser to the bush administration, and he should be tried for war crimes.
I also took these pictures of posters in the lobby.
