An evening with Amy Goodman - pictures
Amy Goodman was here last night. http://democracynow.org/
She was part of as fundraiser for KKFI, our local independent radio station. Her brother David spoke first (and boy does he ever look like his sister!)

He talked about the book tour they have been on since Labor Day and told stories of people they have met on their tour. He said they heard about a soldier who is walking across Utah to commemorate our soldiers who have died in Iraq. And he talked very poignantly about Arlington West, a memorial to our soldiers on the beach on California created by Veterans for Peace. One theme of both David and Amy’s speech was the importance of the media and the images it gives us. Since the media is not giving us images of our dead soldiers, Arlington West is fulfilling a need.

David talked about the tragedy of the torture bill passed this past week and emphasized that it took away rights established in 1215 in the Magna Carta. He also mentioned how the Pentagon has spent money on studies designed to come up with ways to make mothers of soldiers more supportive of the military. And he noted ‘moral character waver policies’ and the disastrous results they have had, specifically the soldier who murdered the little girl in Haditha.

David talked about 400 journalists on the CIA payroll.

Then Amy spoke. She told about NY Governor Pataki asking that a piece of that statue of Sadaam be buried at the WTC site. She said if that is done, it will be the first real connection between Sadaam and 9/11.

Amy also talked about the images of Iraq that have been kept from us. If our media showed us these images for just one week, imagine the effect. She said when she interviewed Aaron Brown, the former CNN reporter, she asked him where are the pictures of Iraq. He said “It’s a matter of taste”. Amy told him “It’s war that is tasteless.”

Amy said the media is the fourth estate, not for the state.

Then she told t-shirt stories. Since I was wearing my IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY t-shirt, I liked this part of her speech very much. She told us about the WE WILL NOT BE SILENT t-shirt

Amy said “We Will Not Be Silent” should be the hypocratic oath of the media today.

And she told about a man and his son in NY who were asked to leave a mall and placed in handcuffs for wearing anti-war t-shirts they had bought at the mall.

Amy said she will begin writing a new column on Oct 24. (Contact your local newspapers, Duers!)

Amy closed by talking about Henry Kissinger and his history. She said is a tragedy that he is such a close adviser to the bush administration, and he should be tried for war crimes.

I also took these pictures of posters in the lobby.

1. Damn it! I miss all the good stuff
If our mutual friend had said something when we had dinner Wednesday night around the campfire I would have attended. As it was, we watched the football game on tv and went to our neighborhood block party.

3. I would have loved it.

I know you would, too.
Hey, I'm getting dangerously close to having a party at my place. It's almost in good enough shape to invite tons of people over.

edit for spelling and alcohol, cuz the Chiefs kicked ass today.

5. Well, you know
how much I like seeing you, chat, proud and the KC gang. The Goodman thing would have been a great excuse to go to KC.

Although, now that I'm thinking about it, everytime our group gets together it automatically becomes a party situation. I'll look for the official invite to your house for an expanded version of your porch parties.

7. Expanded version.
I like that. This will be the big one. I'll cook food, have some good beer and whiskey and other libations. And the entire house will be open.
I've taken the next two days off to try to finish the work I've got going. I'm so close! I got my portable dishwasher converted and installed next to the sink yesterday. My kitchen is now big enough to bowl in.

9. You know us Lawrence people
we're used to potlucks. You can count on us to bring a side dish if you like.

I'm so proud of you. You've been working so hard on your house. I'm glad that you're almost done and it will give us all a reason to celebrate with you. Better yet, the weather will be cool in the evening and that will definitely make the event more enjoyable. Even better, I'll finally get to meet evlspwn. (unless you've told her about me and she's scared.)

18. You should be proud
I know it has been expensive but from what I've seen it has been well spent and worth it.

I look forward to meeting evlspwn. Almost as much as I am looking forward to your cooking and just hanging out with you.

16. That's the mutual friend of whom I spoke
Damn him anyway. We had dinner together at the tsunami survivor's house Wednesday night. You remember him don't you? Anyway, he moved a few blocks away from us. Rex, my husband and I had dinner with him around a campfire. He's headed back to Thailand in a few days. It was our chance to hang out together before he left.

Then again, maybe Rex did mention something. If he did, and I'll give him the benefit of doubt, we had moved on to the porch by that time and were having our party there.

2. Thanks for this.
I missed it, too. My life is once again turned upside down, and the Very Very Bad Year is now well into year two. But I'll be out there towards the mid-terms, come hell or high water.

15. I got her to sign her latest book for me at Fighting Bob's in Wisconsin
I also have a video of her speech I'll put online soon. She really is a fantastic person. I told "thanks for your courage and honesty with what you do" when I got to her sign her book "Static" and she beamed.

Cool gal...
