I think Ken Starr was secretly working for Clinton.
There are post after post referring the Foley scandal as some Machiavellian plot by Rove and the GOP.
I need two tinfoil hats.

6. Very creative conspiracy
ideas aren't they? I don't buy it. Rove is insane but not this crazy. This benefits the DEMs and may be a big break for the DEM running against Hastert.

BTW, love the photo you posted 'Aw not this shit again'. Looks the spitting image of a former employee of mine. Cracks me up everytime I see it.

3. Foley is too senior for this to be any sort of a plot
Plus, it's exposing the GOP leadership as a bunch of unprincipled assholes who put teenagers at risk from a sexual predator by covering for one of their own.

A lot of those family values voters are going to be pissed off by this one.

That's the reason the news broke on a FRIDAY.

They're losing a reasonably senior Representative who was a rising star among the fundies and who was assured of reelection in November. This is NOT the sort of thing they do to take the heat off their emperor.

Also, the notion Starr was working in Clinton's favor is too ludicrous to bother with.

5. I posted a question of timing... and I think it is legit.
I am not claiming a Rovian mastermind.

I am saying that the one issue that the GOP from the head of the RNC, to the Pres to the Congressional delegation and their campaigns have been hitting hard - the only issue they seem to have working for them at the moment... is convincing the public to be still in fear - (911 911 911) and that *only* the GOP can protect them. Heck, that is a big part of the timing of the awful legislation pushed through congress this week - trying to stage for repeats of ads run against Clelland in Ga, because he voted against the HomeLandSecurity legislation.

So this week - bad, bad, bad news in the press that undercuts the story line the GOP is trying to build to a crescendo in November. First the NIE intel reports stating that the war in Iraq has worsened the situation around the world re: global terrorism. Then the Woodward book that paints the Administration in a really poor light - recreating the problem for GOP congressional candidates of a big negative perception among the public for BUsh and by association for them.

Thus - somewhere someone (who knows who? not claiming to know) gets this story that apparently has been outthere to ABC. Maybe they think the story is groundless and ends with a rather innocuous sounding -but perhaps easy to misread for the page- email - but that the press coverage would, like anything "sexy" would dominate other stories. Maybe they think - sacrifice Foley - but its a safe seat... so what... meanwhile save the Terra! Terra! "Dems weak on Terra!" storyline for hte election.

Seriously - there is no indication of why this story was given to ABC (or by who) *now*. Is that really tin-foily to wonder about this? I don't think of it as tinfoil - as much as my cynicism about GOP election tactics.

7. Sad, innit
Watched Blitzer quizzing Bartlett first on Foley, then on Woodward. Bartlett was visibly relieved to discuss State of Denial. The Foley thing leaves the GOP no distancing point, wherever they turn. Don't think Rove would have plotted a plan like that. :eyes:
