Sea change, Planet Earth?

=====
Austria's opposition Social Democrats won nationwide elections on Sunday, the government said, swinging the country to the center-left after more than six years of influence by the extreme right.

The result suggested Schuessel's campaign emphasis on staying a course of business-friendly tax cuts and playing up his image as a safe pair of hands stumbled on discontent over widening income gaps and Muslim immigration.

The Social Democrats, who accused Schuessel of fostering social divisions but appeared damaged by a scandal around trade-union owned bank BAWAG, had been expected to lag Schuessel by 2 to 3 percentage points.
