Handy Timeline Of Foleygate Scandal

By Greg Sargent | bio

So we've decided to make your life easier by giving you as detailed a timeline as possible of the scandal surrounding GOP Rep Mark Foley's emails to House pages and what GOP House leaders knew and when they knew it. We will constantly update the timeline as more info becomes available. View our Election Central Foleygate Timeline after the jump.

Official Election Central Foleygate Timeline:

-- Aug. 31, 2005 (or thereabouts): Copies of GOP Rep Mark Foley emails to page fowarded to staffer in the office of the page's Congressman, GOP Rep. Rodney Alexander.

Snip...

--Fall 2005: Alexander contacts page's parents. They tell him they don't want to pursue matter but want Foley to stop (according to Alexander).

Snip...

--Fall 2005: House clerk Trandahl tells Rep. John Shimkus, the chairman of the House Page board, that Alexander had told him about email exchange between Foley and House page (according to Shimkus). Still unclear is whether Shimkus saw the actual emails. According to Hastert's statement from last night, Alexander declined to show the emails to the clerk or to Shimkus. But according to an interview Shimkus gave to his local paper, he did.

Snip...

--Still later on Sept. 30, 2006: Hastert releases his own statement claiming that "while the Speaker does not explicitly recall" the conversation Reynolds says he had with Hastert, he "has no reason to dispute Congressman Reynold's recollection that he reported to him on the problem and its resolution."

Snip...

--And still later on Sept. 30, 2006: Hastert and Boehner release joint statement announcing creation of "a toll-free telephone number for House Pages, parents, grandparents, and staff to confidentially report incidents of concern."

--Oct. 1, 2006: White House aide Dan Bartlett says there's no need for outside investigation: "The leadership appear to be very aggressive in pursuing this investigation," he said. "I think that's the best place for this investigation to go forward."

--Oct. 1, 2006: Dem Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid demands an outside investigation: "The alleged crimes here are far outside the scope of any Congressional Committee, and the Attorney General should open a full-scale investigation immediately."

2. If there is a guy named "shimkus" involved, there's bound to be trouble.

3. Good job. It will be interesting to see the additions such as the one on
another DU thread - about a warning to pages five years ago. And don't forget to add the date that Foley was named to his commission position related to the protection of children.
