Moosehead (Canadian brewery) to send beer to soldiers in Afghanistan
SAINT JOHN, N.B. -- Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan will soon be able to battle the heat of the southern Afghan desert with some beer from the largest Canadian-owned brewery.

Moosehead Breweries, based in Saint John, N.B., is sending more than 1,700 cans of its Moosehead Lager to Canadian troops stationed in Kandahar, after some of them specifically requested the suds.

Moosehead spokesman Joel Levesque said the beer would be shipped to Afghanistan from Canadian Forces Base Trenton in three rounds, with the first leaving in the next week. Another shipment will leave at the end of October, and a third will be sent in November.

The beer will be tapped on special occasions only - and soldiers will only be allowed to enjoy a cold one when they're off duty.

3. 1700 cans? That's less than one beer per troop!
Smells like (almost) free advertising to me.

10. How many beers would satisfy you?
5000? Ten thousand? What threshold needs to be reached before its more than a publicity stunt?

Also remember that not everyone drinks.

7. Okay sanity check everyone.
Beer and other liquors have been in Afghanistan since 2001 (and prior to that as well, Kabul was a hippie hangout in the 60s). And the Muslims in Afghanistan are not Arabs, except for the some of the Taliban.

9. I can see the advertising campaign now.
There's a soldier in a firefight. He's finally shot the sniper. All his buddies are dead. There's blood and smoke everywhere.

He reaches down to his buddy's belt (which is easy because his buddy is missing a head) and takes his beer, pops the lid and drinks.

Announcer: "You never know when your last mission will be, so before it happens, enjoy Canada's finest beer. American beer is like Democrats - weak and no body. Canadian beer is like Republicans - relentless and doesn't give a damn about anything."
