I am posting this with permission of the author, per a discussion we were having on another board, relating to the murder of the afghani women's affairs officer recently:
Would you care to second a proposal by another Old Fogey that the UN had a 'Roll of Honour' just of women who had given, or simply dedicated their lives to the world or for their fellow Human beings ? I propose that lady's name be on it as well as thos of Dianne Fossey, Rachel Carson, Waangiri Mathi The Irish/Iraqi whose name passes me at the moment, even Princess Dianna perhaps. And if I mix up the authoress of the 'Silent Spring' with that of the young woman who was bulldozed then let both names be inscribed. What say you, and what other names would you suggest ?
Such a memorial ought to have equal significance as those to fallen fighting men as it would also respect mothers who had given their lives for the greater good of the world or young women who had never had the chance to become mothers. Other readers are welcome to make any comments and I sincerely hope that someone picks up this baton and carries it forward.
what say you all, and who would you add to this list?
just off the top of my head, I would add Margaret Sanger, Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin, all the women Nobel Peace Laureates, Jeanette Rankin, Victoria Woodhull, Alice B. Paul, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B Anthony, Emmaline and Cristabel Pankhurst, Ida B Wells, and Madame CJ Walker, just for starters, and, of course, all the mothers who have lost sons and daughters in the endless conflicts of the fathers.
