8. Trying to lay the groundwork to exonerate themselves for their
complicity.

"We didn't know" BS.

No admission that they didn't tell a single Dem about Foley.

CYA - and bad CYA at that.

17. Nope. Stating the obvious - the Rs are deflecting.
The best was the shouts at the end from reporters, "WHY WON'T YOU TAKE QUESTIONS, SIR?"

19. Why statements don't hold water . . .
In Hastert's request to the AG:

" According to an Editor’s Note that appeared on the St. Petersburg Times’ website yesterday, the Times was given a set of emails from Mr. Foley to Representative Alexander’s former page in November of 2005. (See “A Note From the Editors” located at http://blogs.tampabay.com/buzz/ , visited on September 30, 2006). The editors state that they viewed this exchange as “friendly chit chat” and decided not to publish it after hearing an explanation from Representative Foley. <b>Acting on this same communication, the Chairman of the House Page Board and the then Clerk of the House confronted Mr. Foley, demanded he cease all contact with the former page as his parents had requested, and believed they had privately resolved the situation as the parents had requested.</b>"

If they were concerned enough to request "he cease all contact" AND had received a COMPLAINT from the parents . . . WHY would they have not investigated further, unless they wanted to cover it up?

And, does anyone believe they would not have shared this privately with others in the party including the leadership?

21. If nothing else, their diligence isn't worth a darn
Foley's reputation went back for years. Where was the follow up and keeping track? So, the leadership had an obligation to monitor him closely.

Thanks for your information! I hadn't seen that yet.

22. Took no questions?? Hastert is still stonewalling. This is a "modified
linmited hangout." Haldeman and Nixon apparently still have some devotees in the Republican Party.

24. more . . .
Haven't seen this discussed yet . . .

In July 2006, CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) forwarded the emails to the FBI for investigation.

They have now requested that the DOJ I.G. probe why the FBI didn't investigate and that an outside counsel investigate why the leadership did not investigate further - especially given the 16 year old himself indicated TWICE the exchange had 'freaked him out'.

"Several members of the Republican leadership have now admitted to knowing for nearly a year that Rep. Foley engaged in email exchanges with a sixteen-year-old former House page. These members, including Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Reps. Rodney Alexander (R-LA), John Shimkus (R-IL) and Tom Reynolds (R-NY) have all claimed that they failed to take action because the boy’s parents did not want to pursue the matter. The decision not to investigate further left other House pages unprotected and vulnerable to a potential sexual predator."
