Daniel Bever Crane (born January 10, 1936) is a former American politician. Crane, a native of Cook County, Illinois, graduated from Indiana University with a degree in dentistry, and was a practicing dentist before his entry into politics. Crane joined the United States Army in 1965, and served until 1970. Crane resumed his dental practice after his military service, and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican in 1978. He was re-elected in 1980 and in 1982. After his 1982 re-election, Crane was charged with having a sexual relationship with an underage female congressional page. On July 14, 1983, the House Ethics Committee concluded that Crane had engaged in a sexual relationship eith a 17-year-old congressional page three years earlier. Crane plead guilty to the charges and the committee decided to simply reprimand him along with Congressman Gerry Studds who was charged with similar misconduct. However, U.S. Rep. Newt Gingrich demanded the expulsion of both Crane and Studds. On July 20, the House voted for censure, the first time that censure had been imposed for sexual misconduct. Crane, who tearfully apologized for his transgression, lost his bid for reelection in 1984. Crane is the brother of Philip Crane, another former Republican congressman from Illinois.
