Enabler-In-Chief: Is Laura Bush partly to blame for the failure of BushCo?

I count on my family and in particular my wife to be willing to stand up to me and smack me up-side the head when I'm acting stupid.

Based upon Woodward's 60 Minutes interview, I get the impression that Laura isn't a co-equal in their relationship.

The quote that most struck me was... "I will not withdraw even if laura and barney are the only ones supporting me."

Maybe I'm not being fair to her, and maybe it's not her job in their marriage to drag her nut-job husband back into the world of reality... but I don't think it's an unreasonable expectation of a First Lady, do you?

Even if he isn't drinking anymore (and I have serious doubts about his claim that he doesn't drink any more), neither of them have evern addressed the fall-out of living with an alcoholic. Taking away the drink doesn't take away the sick, co-dependent, enabling behaviors of family members. Laura is the perfect co-dependent.

When Laura was a bride, her mother-in-law told her "No one criticizes George W." The behavior was already in place. Laura no doubt learned that if she wanted to keep her teeth, she would be the constant flatterer.
