The pace of life is steadily increasing, we drive faster, we
multi-task, we drum our fingers waiting for the microwave to ding,

So how come, 50 years ago, rock songs were 2 minutes and change, 3 minutes at the most, and they got progressively longer and longer???

1. Because Rock and Roll became another commodity.
Make the gold bricks bigger! Spend less time writing more songs versus stretching out one song (and having 3 commemorative remixes).

2. The size of the 45 RPM record was a factor
How much could be put on that space at a reasonable price and be playable by the kind of small record player that teenagers tended to buy.
