2. The fourth one doesn't come out right.
It suggests that favoring separation of church and state, homosexuality, and abortion is the position of the devil.

Not cool.

4. No, it suggests the devil is more liberal than Bush
Which makes some sense to me.

I would rather live next door to the devil any day. That's how evil I think Bush is. The devil is merely a fallen angel. Bush is the human embodiment of evil on earth.

5. The devil is more liberal than Bush.
I am more liberal than Bush, therefore, I am more like the devil than Bush.

No, thank you.

The toon can't parse out your definition of the devil as a "fallen angel". To readers, the devil is the emboidment of evil. Putting liberal views alongside the devil is not funny, correct, or productive.

8. I think the point is...
The devil can be anything you want him to be. He is a fictional character. "They" see free will as evil.

10. The toon doesn't work.
The devil is not "anything you want him to be". It is a symbol. A symbol that represents darkness and evil in all cultures where it is found.

Ficticious or real is not relevent. Neither is the issue about free will. It's about homosexuality, abortion, and the separation of church and state.

If you have to reverse the dominent meaning of a symbol to make the cartoon work, it doesn't work.

13. The devil is a projection...
of whatever it is you consider most evil. To the fundies it's Hollywood and gays, etc. It also requires a certain mentality to view the world in such terms, that's why it works for me.

14. The devil is my favorite Christian icon
He is as much "anything you want him to be" as Christ is.
