Rep. Boehner Points Finger at Hastert re: Foley

Boehner Points Finger at the Speaker

ABC's Teddy Davis reports: In a radio interview with 700 WLW radio in Cincinnati, House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) placed responsibility for the Foley matter not being handled properly on House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL).

"I believe I talked to the Speaker and he told me it had been taken care of," said Boehner. "And, and, and my position is it's in his corner, it's his responsibility. The Clerk of the House who runs the page program, the Page Board—all report to the Speaker. And I believe it had been dealt with."

Please note that by saying that he talked with the Speaker about Foley, Boehner is reversing course and going back to his original position.

On Friday, Boehner told the Washington Post that he "had learned in late spring of inappropriate e-mails Foley sent to the page, a boy from Louisiana, and that he promptly told Hastert, who appeared to know already of the concerns. Hours later, Boehner contacted The Post to say he could not be sure he had spoken with Hastert." LINK

According to today's radio interview, Boehner has gone back to saying that he did talk to Hastert about Foley.

20. He's right though. Hastert IS primarily responsible for page program...
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 09:41 AM by calipendence
He has the final call on who gets selected for the page programs. 2/3rds of those he selected this year were recommended by Republicans as indicated in this article, where one kid had "hero worship" for him and also when he did that infamous swearing in of Brian Bilbray.

Page program provides opportunities

The congressional page program is a wonderful learning opportunity for high school students to serve their country while seeing firsthand how our government works.

Pages can serve in one of four terms: the fall semester (September-January), the spring semester (February-June) or one of two three-to-four week summer sessions.

Selection is a very competitive process. Members select the most exceptional students with strong academic qualifications and a record of achievement in extracurricular activities or public service. The speaker of the House makes the final selection among those nominated by members.

The most recent "class" of Pages consisted of 66 students, 44 selected by Republican House members.

...

Josh recalled two of his favorite moments during his tenure as a page. One was watching the special ceremony to swear in Rep. Brian Bilbray, after he won California's 50th District. His other favorite memory is having his picture taken with House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert.

Pages are employees of the U.S. House of Representatives, and play an important role in the legislative process. Pages are required to live at the Page Residence Hall under the supervision of a director, assistant director and proctors who reside on the premises.

...

Boehner is all too eager to point fingers, but folks are right that Hastert should be going down first!

37. Boehnr, or whatever his name is, implicates himself in his own statement..
"I believe I talked to the Speaker and he told me it had been taken care of," said Boehner

Aaahh....so Boehner knew about it BUT he was assured that SOMEONE ELSE had taken care of it SO HE DIDN'T feel obligated to do so himself?

Bye Bye Boner!!

are hard to keep straight, after a while one tends to forget what they said when. I had a co/friend worker who couldn't tell a truth even if it was the better of the options he was faced with. These guys remind me of him.

Anybody hear how ABC came to have the story and materials to back it up?

your circular firing squads are much more deadly than ours. We Dems have substance and character, allowing us to rise from our occasional internal squabbles.

You all have dark, empty cores, causing you to crumple when challenged, especially by fellow occupants of the dark, disgusting corners where you reside.

A Brazilian film about children's gangs living in abject poverty.

Dadinho - Li'l Dice is the kid with the gun. He's about the nastiest thing you've ever seen...if you watch the film you'd see what I mean: An 8-year-old psychopath with a revolver and a little in the way of morals and conscience.

I like how Boehner says he believes it was dealt with…..dealt with how? Was there an investigation? Wouldn’t you have been aware of an investigation? Did Foley resign 2 years ago? Did you read a bout it in the paper? Was there a criminal investigation?

Why didn’t you follow up on all these missing things? Oh yeah, by “dealt with” you mean swept under the rug so Foley could go on diddling children. I get it.

How WAS it dealt with?

If DeLay were still running the show, you can bet that every Republican in the leadership would be on TV trying to cover Hastert's ass instead of their own.

BTW if Hastert was complicit in this, then I'm sure DeLay was as well. Any chance that we could tack another 5 to 10 years onto his prison sentence?

39. I love sex scandal stories that have the word "finger" in the title.
It always gives me a immature giggle.

On a side note: I would avoid Boehner's fingers at all costs. Can you imagine where those things have been!? Let alone what they smell like. I guessing it's a mixture of cigarette smoke, and astro-glide.

On another side note: I love how when spell checking Boehner's name comes up as "Boner's".

Hastert was interviewed by Limblah(the rethugs main propaganda tool) today.

Below is an excerpt. Notice how Hastert is all over the place with his answer. He talks about the economy, 911, national security (the rethug talking points) and doesn't stay on the subject. He never really talks about what, if anything, was done about Foley when they were told of the IMs the first time, only what was done when things became public. Yet, he somehow attempts to confuse the two instances. Is it just me, or does this man seem like someone who is not telling the whole truth? This will make you sick, especially the comment at the end by Limblah:

RUSH: We're happy to be joined now by the Speaker of the House, Denny Hastert. Mr. Speaker, welcome to the EIB Network. Great to speak to you again, sir.

SPEAKER HASTERT: Thanks, Rush. Great to be with you today.

RUSH: Now, I guess the big news is, the Washington Times' admittedly conservative editorial page has asked for you to step down and resign, and you have said you're not going to do that. Correct?

SPEAKER HASTERT: Well, yeah. I'm not going to do that. What we've tried to do is -- focused on this Foley thing is -- do the right thing. We had two messages. There were two pieces of paper out there, one that we knew about and we acted on; one that happened in 2003 we didn't know about, but somebody had it, and, you know, they're trying -- and they drop it the last day of the session, you know, before we adjourn on an election year. Now, we took care of Mr. Foley. We found out about it, asked him to resign. He did resign. He's gone. We asked for an investigation. We've done that. We're trying to build better protections for these page programs. But, you know, this is a political issue in itself, too, and what we've tried to do as the Republican Party is make a better economy, protect this country against terrorism -- and we've worked at it ever since 9/11, worked with the president on it -- and there are some people that try to tear us down. We are the insulation to protect this country, and if they get to me it looks like they could affect our election as well.

RUSH: Well, it's clear to me that what the Democrats are doing here in some sort of cooperation with some in the media is to suppress conservative turnout by making it look like you guys knew this all along but because you're so interested in holding the House rather than protecting children that you covered it up.

SPEAKER HASTERT: Yeah.

The whole thing can be found at http://www.rushlimbaugh.com

I must go shower now after having been at Rush's site.

43. Tell him to go away - that solves the problem!
When I saw that Boehner said he thought that spoke to Hastert and said "I believe it had been dealt with." Is that sort of the Catholic method?

I remember the outrage when many Catholic priests had molested many of the children in their parishes the Catholic church dealth with it by reassigning the priests to another parish. The strategy worked for many years but it did not solve the problem as the number of children being abused kept growing and growing until it could no longer be swept under the rug.
