Anyone know about the Gerry Stubbs "scandal"? |
|
I googled it and didn't find much. I've seen when he was censored he turned his back on house members...which seems a little out of line considering he was doing something with a 17 year old page.
I'd hate to have sent my kid to DC as a page and had him hit on by a member of congress of either sex.
Why did Stubbs get off? What did he do with the kid?

3. Both Parties had Reps that were censured. |
|
It was a way to neutralize the issue for both Parties. Gerry felt it was no one's business....I guess the people of his district agreed, because they kept electing him. I'm not proud of what Studds did, but at least the House worked properly back then....one Party did not hide its dirty laundry from the American people.
Frankly, I pass on judgement of Foley's actions except that he was an outspoken hypocrite-moralist when it came to Democratic weaknesses. Republicans have made an unholy alliance with the RR in order to take/maintain power, so I enjoy seeing these people hoisted on their own petards.

there's not much in a fast google search. And since it looks like he was doing it with an underage person, it was despicable and not to be excused.
Always, always, always, the adult has the responsibility to behave honorably. Gender and sexual orientation have nothing to do with it. And given that the page program is intended for kids still in high school, they are always going to be under age.

7. interesting tidbit about Gerry Studds fallout - |
|
I was a sophomore when the scandal hit. The Carpentry teacher at my high school stood along the 4th of july parade route with anti-gay/anti-Studds/anti-Barney Frank placards (i.e. he was a freeper before there were freepers). The following school year he found a family of oppossums in the scrap wood pile behind the carpentry shop, bludgeoned them to death, dressed them, and had the culinary department make possum stew.
They gave it away at lunch. I had some, it was very gamey.
Within days the story of the possum stew was in the paper, and every picture they used of this teacher was of him holding an anti-gay placard with a crazy look in his eyes. He "retired" early. The amount of column space dedicated to this ant-gay zealot was at least double what was given to the Stubbs scandal, and in every story about the possum stew, the teacher was described as "Carpentry teacher and ant-gay activist".
Well, okay, maybe that's not interesting, but it's my only real memory of the Gerry Stubbs scandal.
